again i dont recall this being common on the 2.6 but who knows... It's not terribly common in the 2.6, you're exactly right, but I have seen it. Fact is, I've got a little bit of that going on in the turbo truck right now - it has about 50,000 miles on the rebuilt engine. I'm planning to pull the head and have it gone through by a shop that's better than the one that built it in the first place. There are a couple of other "freshen-up" items I plan to address while I'm there. Mind you, the truck runs fine, but just a puff of smoke on start up. I suspect that's the same thing going on with your truck.
87 Montero, bought new, by me - 88/89 intercooled Starion Turbo engine- with awesome audio.

I checked out the '87 Raider after work today...
It's got the off-road package;the gear box and transfer case seemed to be working fine. Tried 4wd high and low without any issues. It's a 5 speed manual. The shifting was positive and all gears provided the amount of torque I'd expect from a 2.6L.
Give it some Holiday Bling! and help out that 5 speed a bit. http://www.tuffpans.com

The owner of the Raider needs more money for her rig than I can pay... She is planning on trading it in on the "cash for clunkers" deal. She told me they would give her $1,000 for the Montero. Sorry, I just can't afford it right now. I'll be keeping my eyes open in the future however...

She's bluffing.... CFC is over. Unless its a dealer that running a program and adding the cost of the montero to the other end of the deal.
Leave a number for her to call you if she changes her mind. The best deal yo make is the one your willing to blow.

That is exactly what I thought when she mentioned CFC. Although she was convinced that she could get a grand and it's not for a trade in either. This was a hand me down rig from her mother and has become a third vehicle at their home. Like you said, KevinC, I don't really need this project right now, so I've got nothing to loose. I'll give her another call today...

The federal CFC program is over, yes. However, if the Raider in question has been a tested gross polluter, Kali still pays to get these vehicles off the road. I think this is a method of getting pollution credits to spread around elsewhere.

If the mileage is that low and its in OK shape a $1000 or so is still a pretty decent price. I would buy it but... I dont really need another project right now either.

Well it turns out the jury is still out on the owner's decision... I called her back today and tugged on her heart strings a bit, telling her that my kid is interested in learning how to wrench on vehicles and how this would be a great project for us to do together. She started to waver, and said she would give it some more thought! Never say die!

The owner will come down to $800 dollars, but it's still out of reach for me at this time. She plans on trying to get $1,000 from CRC for it, but will let it go for $800. The rig is in Santa Cruz County. PM me if you're interested.
