I have to say that most instructors are probably mechanics that couldnt make it in the business world. I dont know your friend or his abilities so I cant judge. I dont think it is prudent to blame clearwater over this incident though. It sounds like the engine and or head was not assembled properly and a lesson is learned? I hate that this happened to you but this is a good reason why mechanics with a storefront and insurance are your best if you dont feel like doing the work yourself.

What complete and total BS. And astronauts are just pilots that couldn't hack it in the air, right?

Actually astronauts are the best of the best, picked from the top of the respective aviation classes, be it navy or air force, probably due to the fact they only have one chance to get it right. Ill also have to add, working around pilots all day, most of them are also complete morons with a bunch of money or a huge ego. I didnt judge his friend, he may be a good mech but judging by the outcome, a total engine failure...

THe Marnal and Alabama castings are alternates, but I don't think it's the head. The clearwater comes without the cam plug installed, because it's in the head gasket set, a plastic cup about a half inch deep. It's in the pressure oil path, and I bet it was never installed, or installed dry. It WON'T come out unless the rear cam bearing cap was not torqued down, and in that case, the oil will leak like crazy at the joint between the halves of the rear cam bearing cap, because the oil gallery passes thru the cap.

I see an install error here. And I'm with WWFF here, my son or not. Pilots are not all that bright. Know how you tell a pilot in the shower? Big watch and tiny hootus. THere was a study done just prior to ww2 that showed that the best pilot was a high class moron, who lacked the intelligence to become bored while flying....

I think that your right there.

On side note to all. Any time you get a RED OIL light come on you need to stop right there. And find out why it might be on.

The oil pressure light comes on at like 5psi, which is way too late for the motor in some cases, especially if you are at loaded cruise at 3000+rpms...

Well, having retired with 21000 hours+ and flown everything worldwide from fighters to B747s, it's my observation that people who criticize pilots are wannabes who couldn't.

I graduated from Embry Riddle, the finest aviation college in the world. I have had more than enough opportunity to fly and earn a license, but I find it incredibly boring and very expensive. I criticize pilots because I have to deal with them every day, police chopper pilots, charter pilots and the little guy in his Cessna 150. I respect any military pilot, past or present. So, I must say, I am not one of those people who never could, I just felt my life would be wasted moving "cattle" around the earth in a flying greyhound bus that basically lands itself.

Wow, this is to good to pass up.

1. Many on this board including myself have had good luck with clearwater. However, stuff happens and it always sucks when it happens to you.

2. I spent nine years working with the best pilots in the world which happen to be US Marines flying the F-18 Some of them were brilliant and some of them were bone heads. Always send the bone heads when you need to drop live ordnance within 100 yards of friendly's.

3. I used to fly a Cessna 172SP at $100 hour wet. It's up to $135 now. It was fun but now I have wife and kids to take that money.

Bottom line is sometimes you get pilot like Sullenberger and sometimes you get a pilot that needs a breathalyzer. Same goes for mechanics
