I read a whole bunch of posts on tires but I still have a few questions... this is for a 94 LS.

First I want to make sure I'm correct that 31 x 10.5 x 15 tires will fit on stock rims and have no rubbing issues - is that right? Will I even need to mess with the torsion bars if I go that size?

Second, can anyone recommend a good, relatively cheap tire in that size that will be good for snowy roads and light trail use?

Finally, any tire places that are great or should be avoided? I really don't want to have to argue with someone to get them to put on different size tires than the OE.

Thanks!

Jim

Tire prices have skyrocketed in the past year. One BF goodrich All Terrain is around 200 dollars here in Atlanta now. There are a few other oddball brands I and a friend have been looking at, Federal Couragia M/T is around 100 a tire. They look awesome but I have no idea how they would hold up. They also make an all terrain Couragia. These could very well wear out in a few thousand miles. I have never had a problem getting them to mount the 31x10.50 15 on the rims. The BFG AT is the best tire out there for all around road, off road, mud traction and comfort but you have to pay an arm and a leg. The 31's may rub a tiny tiny bit in the front at full steering lock without a torsion bar crank. You can go to the bump stops on the back with the most hardcore axle articulation in the rear and they wont rub. I have read conflicting posts that the 33's may or may not rub at certain points.

Thanks for the info! I would love to get a set of BFG's but I can't justify the expense right now. I've driven the monty under 5000 miles per year for the past 3 or 4 years, so a 40,000 mile tire would still give me 8 years or so of life. I think I'll probably go with one of the mid-priced brands, especially if I can find a buy 3 get 1 free deal. If they rub a little in the front at full articulation then I'll avoid full articulation for a while - at least until it's warm enough to crawl underneath and adjust the t-bars, since I have to wrench outside.

Let us know if you find any buy 3 get 1 free.. I'm in the market for my Montero - sadly it's going to cost a cool 800+ for the 4 tires I want installed.

Body Damage is Cool
Oddly, I called WallyWorld and asked for "a set of 31 x 10.5s." They told me they had some and I asked for a price, which they gave me - $125/tire. Not overly expensive, I thought.

When I got there, they pulled the truck in and began mounting a set of BFGs, so I asked the guy at the counter whether they were mounting the correct tire and he assured me they were. By the time all was said and done, still less than $600 for the set mounted and balanced with the fees, mop, slop, etc.

Of course now this IS the same place that claimed they couldn't find the right oil filter which which to perform an oil change too, so... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Take it for what it's worth.

Other than the RS models i?ve never seen a montero come with less than a 31 inch tire, pretty sure most gen 2?s came stock with 31?s.

I've run 31 x 10.5 and 32 x 11.5 on my 94 SR and have never had a rubbing problem.

I prefer the feel of the extra width of 11.5 tires. The steering is a little stiffer and the truck does not seem as tippy

Unfortunately it's looking like the only place that has anything other than car tires buy 3 get 1 is pep boys, who I don't care for at all, and they have so many additional fees that I don't think I'd end up saving anything. I was hoping to get 5 new tires, but I guess I'll just keep an old one as the spare.

I think they came with 235/75/R15, which translates to around 29".

4 wheel parts also has 3 + 1 deals regularly. Not sure if they have it right now but if not, it may be worth a small wait.

Also, tire manufacturers sometimes drive these sales so it also depends on them.
