I am sure whether the crankiness comes from being a gunsmith or if it is a prerequisite. I wonder that about old beekeepers too. Nice work Frank; gotta love it.

I wonder that about old beekeepers too. No kidding. My Pappy (kind of my adopted grandpa) was cantankerous as hell, but I learned alot about life helping him with his bees. Watching all the progress on this is very interesting, Frank. Keep up the fine work

Well, I have a new issue to attack tomorrow. I bought a set of long rings today for the Mauser. They were almost long enough. The bolt doesn't quite clear the scope. The mounts are Weaver style. I need to find a thicker mount or a shim.

Jim, the bolt clearance with a Springfield is resolved by using a bent bolt handle - not sure about the Mauser. If the clearance is minimal, you can use taller rings. If you only need a few thousandths clearance, a snip of beer can metal will usually work.

I took a look at some Mausers and confirmed my suspicion - you need a different bolt handle to clear a modern scope with a large eyepiece and anything other than very high mounts. Here's a link to something you can use as an idea of what to do - I haven't researched the best option for Mausers and there may be a better alternative: web page My advice (FWIW) would be to change/alter the bolt handle in order to keep the scope as low as possible. About 1.5" between the bore center and scope center is about right. I've set up my 1903 at 1.75" because of the 1-piece mount and I sure wouldn't want the scope any higher. You'll need to identify which Mauser action you have if you order something ready-made - or you can bend and grind it yourself. Here are some DIY instructions: web page Frank

My Mauser already has a bent bolt handle. It probably is as tightly bent as possible. It fits very close to the stock. Most Mausers use a special mount system that has a bridge between the front and rear mounts. I have that type of mount on Voere. The Mauser came with standard Weaver type mounts and I put long rings on those, but the bolt just doesn't quite clear the scope.
I am going to try to make a couple of shims to see if that will work. If not, I will order the Mauser specific mount as soon as I can identify which model of Mauser I have. The marks that are usually used to identify the type of Mauser have been removed from this receiver.

Well, I resolved the issue today. I found some rings that are longer and they work perfectly. I have lots of clearance.
I also picked up slings for the .270 and the 30.06. We are ready now to head to the range, first to bore sight the rifles and then to sight them in. I am really interested to see how each of them shoot. Two of them, the Savage 30.06, and the .300 Win Mag have reputations as tack drivers. I suspect that the .270 should do fine, also.
I do have a recoil pad coming for the Savage.

Well, the problem was your fault, Frank. I hadn't done anything to the Savage yet.
