Serpentine belt squeal! #1016415 12/29/10 04:56 AM

I put a brand new Gates belt on the 01 Friday...its already starting to squeak! The previous one was howling. Idlers and tensioner are less than a year old. I go through a $40 belt every 6-8 months and the noise drives me crazy! Any ideas?

I literally will sell this thing if I can't cure it. Been looking at Land Cruisers anyway.

Maybe a silly question, but have you tried spraying belt dressing on it?

At least the belt squeal lets you know the engine is running.

That's not recommended. Read the can. On my M-I-L's 02, I've had to use OE belts to keep squeals at bay.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Are all the pulleys and idlers aligned?

Can you determine where the squeal is coming from? (alternator, power steering, A/C, idler)

Does it change with the A/C on?

I will bet your alternator has failed. Is the squeal intermittent? If so determine what load is causing the squeal.

The intensity of the squeal varies with the RPM. AC on or off makes no difference. The squeal is from the belt itself, nothing else. Sounds like birds chirping at idle to solid squeal at 1250rpm onward. Everything is in-line and true as far as alignment. All pulleys and idlers feel great.

I'm so frustrated with this I'm honestly ready to give up. Anyone want an 01 Monty Limited?

Sounds like you have a bearing ready to fail.

One trick for belts, take a bar of soap and with the engine running, hold the soap against the belt. If the noise stops, you have a belt tension problem. If the noise continues, you have a bearing issue.

And, if you want your engine compartment to momentarily smell better, use a deodorant soap. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Tried bar soap on the previous belt...worked for about 20 minutes then the squeal came back.

Take another look at the tensioner.

I replaced the tensioner with in the last year. No cheap date either...and quite the pain in the ass to change.

If its bad, I want a refund.
