Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a lot of build up on the exhaust valve on number 4 cylinder. Should I worry about this? I don't really have the money to rebuild the entire head, but I could replace the exhaust valves.

When I removed the piston it was cracked in 3 places and basically fell out of the cylinder. So I assume it had oil pouring into the cylinder. The block and cylinders were surprisingly in fairly good shape, I dropped it off to be honed and new pistons and rings installed.

Any advice is appreciated,

Ryan

Need a Spot
You could wire brush that off, Be sure thats not a crack between the valves.

Roll the cam and get each valve to open and visually inspect the seating area for pitting and any other issues. If they look decent, run it. What I see is an oil buildup and since you had a known failure you do not need to go far to find an oiling issue.

I concur. I'd scrape/wirebrush/clean the vavle head if the seats and valve seat contact ring is clean and tight, just to get rid of potential hot spots that could cause preignition. I didn't see a problem crack. If there wasn't an incipient crack there, I'd worry...

Thanks everyone! I will wire brush it clean and inspect to make sure there are no cracks.

I was hoping that would be your answer, my block will cost me about $600 by the time I get it out of the engine shop. But still - I should have a good running Montero for a little over $1200 total.

Thanks again,
Ryan
