I suggest looking for a '96 (DOHC 3.5L) SR which will have a locker and 4.636

One other advantage over 96 and newer is the introduction of the OBDII system.

Off Roader
98 Montero with the Winter Package
89 Montero minty clean and reserved for overlanding trips or Cars and Coffee events
96SR (3.15:1 xcase, 35's) gone to the rust gods

This is probably a rare item. A feller here has a '99 LS. It is a Gen 2 in every way except it has the SOHC 3.5.
I'll bet it's a cheaper and a little simpler engine to maintain.
He won't sell it.
There's still a 4.36 SR locker in the yard here, 135 K , 1996. San Luis Auto . They'll ship.

All Gen 2 and 2.5 Monteros from 97 onwards have a 3.5l SOHC and 4.272 gears. They also have a different transmission, hence the different body mount height. I have a SHOC 3.5l in mine and I wouldn't call in simpler It still has 4 valves per cylinder run off a single cam per bank. Makes for an interesting rocker assembly The Gen 2.5 Monteros do not come as SR or LS. I think the one with a locker is the winter package? Not sure.

The 96 SR in the yard Dave mentioned would have 4.636 gears and you'd need the front diff too. I really enjoyed swapping the front diff on mine...it was awesome Actually, it wasn't bad because I made Angelo bench press it in place while I wrenched

Bought a Montero yet?

'97 Montero 'LSR' - 4.6 gears & factory rear locker, 33" Procomp muds on 15x8 steelies, 50mm coil spacers, T-bar crank, Airlift, sans rear sway, 50mm rear frame & fuel tank lift, Aisins, ARB front bumper + 10k lb winch, 50mm DIY body lift, rock sliders, cut rear quarter panels...

I have owned at 1990 Montero LS 4dr for many years-Twice actually...With the factory Limited slip and 33x10.5x15 BFG muds it would do just about anything I wanted. NOW I just recently bought a 1995 montero SR! I bought it being skeptic...I wanted to see if it was nicer. I also have/had serious thought s of fixing up and selling. Now that I have been driving it the past several days I'm not so sure LOL! it's definatly a nice truck and has convinced me that whatever I do i will always own a mitsubishi truck.

Honestly, this is a 99 CA emmission Gen 2 body with 3.5 SOHC , AT, 4.36 rear open diff( and 4.36 front diff ).
I posted about it last year and got some good explaination from some on here who know a wholelot more than I.
I think it's like when you could buy old oldtimy lookin Jeep pickup in 67 when they produced the Studebaker lookin one since like 63.
