With the pin in, I tacked the gears in front. Then I pulled the pin out and rotated the assembly 90 degrees so I could weld the back side of the gears. This pic just shows the tacks before I did the full weld...I was able to weld the full length between the tack welds:

I then rotated it back the way it's supposed to be, but the pin back in, and then finished welding from the front.
Sorry, I took this pic a few months ago and didn't realize that it was out of focus. Hopefully it's good enough to get the idea.
