Should my 2.6l have "silent shafts"? #1019166 01/25/11 11:28 PM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Okay, another question for you guys.

I was just scrolling through my FSM to kill time, and stumbled upon a "silent shafts" section (pg 413 in the 1984). Is mine supposed to have this option? They were not there when I disassembled my engine, and the timing/oil chains were not obviously missing anything. Was there a delete kit that I might possibly have (hopefully)?

I was just about to drop the engine back in when I noticed this. I guess that would explain why it locked up if it is required.

Thanks,
Ryan

Thanks for the quick response.

I just looked through my "extra" parts the truck came with and found the silent shafts...

My next question is: I installed a new stock oil pump - will this work as-is? Or does it require a different oil pump for the delete kit?

Thanks again,
Ryan

That, I don't know. I had a garage build my motor, so i have not messed with these 2.6 much. others on hear call them ballance shafts. here's one of many links on the subject web page

If you have a stub shaft that bolts in the top gear of the pump in place of the silent shaft, you're set, if not, you'll have to find a new press-in plug/stub shaft to close the oil passage in it, or you'll have no oil pressure at all.

My 2.6 also had a delete kit put in by a prev owner, still runs good, and it might have saved it from a catastrophic timing chain explosion when the drivers side chain guide came unglued and was flapping around.

It's up to you if you put the shafts in, but they really are only there to reduce the vibration that you feel in the cabin, which is moot point on a trail rig IMHO.

Again, be SURE to check that the oil passage in the top (non-driven) pump gear is plugged with either a solid plug, or a hollow brass sleeve, or a stub shaft!

Easy way to see if all is well, if the pan is on and has oil in it, is to put an electric impact gun on the nut on driven side of the oil pump, with the chain off, and spin her up. You should peg the oil pressure gauge, and have some spray-out on the relief valve on the side of the pump.

Messy, but worth the peace of mind.

Hope some of that helped.

Yes that was very helpful, thank you both. I transferred a stub shaft from my old oil pump to the new one. I couldn't figure out why it was there at the time, I just assumed the same oil pump was used on a different engine. I am sure glad I transferred it over though!

Thank you again, I just have a few things left and then I am ready to install.

Be sure that you use thread locker on those bolts for the gear and the stub shaft, also make sure the small oil pump woodruff key did not fall out and that the small drive gear is on the right direction- both sides of that gear have a timing mark not used with the delete kit, but some see a timing mark and think if faces front and the gear could be on backwards... Try it on both ways and look at the chain alignment- 1 is perfect and the other way is off just a bit that will toss the chain in about 50 miles.
