Getting the Wheeling Fever
So, we went wheeling today and a couple of the guys with me think the truck is running poorly. They said it is visibly smoking as well as "sounds" like it is running on 5 cylinders. I'm arguing that if it had such a bad misfire, that it would throw a code and the check engine light would come on.
I'm wondering if the catalytic converter is clogging up due to the bad valve stem seals?

On occasion it feels like it is lugging pretty bad and I do get a bit of a shudder at 40mph-ish.

Disconnect the isc plug and see if it will start and idle. If so, then pull one plug wire at a time and see if the idle speed stays the same or drops. If it stays the same, that cylinder is misfiring...

Idle Speed Control?

Wouldn't the computer throw a code if it were misfiring?

Idle Speed Control?

Yes Idle speed control, since we're talking 95 SR, you cant disconnect the wires while the engine is running.

Not always..

When's the last time the wires and plugs have been changed? A big job on that engine, but thats where I would start. Also Check the resistance of the coil packs while your in there.

Ok guys. So, I replaced the plugs. I did not replace the wires because of the difficulty. Truck ran GREAT for 3 days until today it decided to go back to misfiring.

The lugging went away and the idle was smooth when it was running properly.

How do I test the coils as mentioned above?

And where in the FSM is the Idle Speed Control plugs?

Looking up plug wires now... I'll also need the intake plenum gasket because it will be removed, correct?

If anyone is willing to call to help me, three 1 eight- 7 nine four 33 six two.

Yup, the tan one. ISC was completely dead. Put a new ISC in and presto cablamo, works like a champ and idles normally now (high until warmed up) when cold.

Sorry to hear about the continued issues with the rough idle. I'm sure some of the guru's on here will be able to help you diagnose it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

BTW, I'd be willing to bet you'll want to re-pull the plugs and post up pictures. It's possible one of them is covered in oil like before which means there's something wrong in that cylinder... but what do I know... I haven't slept in a Holiday Inn Express in years. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
