For the most part my truck is perfect for what I do.

I went to Reno Nevada today through Sacramento on Hwy 80.
On the way there my truck was or seemed doggie. 60 mph in one place in 4th gear pedal on the floor.
But on the return, about 15 miles out of Reno it ran very well. 70-75mph all the way home.

I want a truck that will pull it at 70 to 75mph both ways with out putting the peddle on the floor.

Must have good low end power and chug along good at 1000rpm or lower, over most terrain in low 4 wheel drive.
This is because of ground speed.
A better ride would be okay also.

What do you suggest?

Well, if you want to stay Toyota, a newer Tacoma. If you like the size of the truck you have now, 95.5-04, if you want something a little bigger, 05-present. 1st generation Tundra? 4WD? Give us some more criteriaà

Have you regeared your axles for the bigger tires? You'd be surprised what a difference that can make.
That, and have you changed your intake? With the open exhaust/headers and cam, the 3" Supra intake can make a difference too. More in, more out.

I like Toyota a lot, better than most.
I don't believe the 3.0 will give that much more drive ability. And I'm not familiar with the rest of the line from Toyota.

4X4 is a must. I like locking my hubs. Not crazy about automatics but I'm open.

Actually I'm open to most anything. This is all uncharted territory for me. Living in California eliminates meaningful engine swaps.
I want something more with out giving up anything I now have. Is the quality of the Tacoma as good as what I have now? Do I need to stay away from automatic trannys?
Is the running gear as good?
I tried to pull up a small bush with my pickup on asphalt and all tires left rubber. It was in low range.

Help me out here.

3000rpm is 70mph right now.

First of all, why aren't you using 3rd gear? It should maintain speed up those grades a lot better in 3rd. Yes, it will be revving high, but that's where the power band is. With my old rig loaded (86 4runner), I could usually stay pretty close to the speed limit over Donner summit as long as I used 3rd.

A Tacoma would suit your needs too. More power and torque. The autos are good in those newer trucks. DOHC engines like to rev high though. Some of the Taco's have manual hubs, and most or all can be converted.

And CA laws leave plenty of engine swap possibilities. All it has to be is the same year or newer and you have to keep all the smog equipment installed. That said, I don't think any engine swap is really worth it unless you are really attached to your current truck.

I'd go for a 95.5-04 v6 taco if i were you. if you look hard, you can find a 5spd with manual hubs.

I don't have manual hubs yet, but the Taiga Taco does pretty well with a 1000# camper on back and air bags underneath. 5sp with cruise is ver' nice. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The AFM is a direct swap for 82-83 Supra.
IIRC up to '86 (or whatever that model was) wil lwork, but may require re-pinning the connector so it lines up. there's quite a bit of discussion from here and the old Off-Road.com site.

W/ 30" tires, you'd probably want 4.56 gears. 4.88 would be even nice but actually overgeared, resulting in higher RPMs. IMO not necessarily bad, but louder.
With the open exhaust and (if you do it) intake, the real powerband is from ~3200-4000. These motors can run all day at the high RPMs, and love it - it's just louder.
Do the math on the diference - going from 4.10 to 4.56 is about 10%... so instead of 3000 RPM it'll be more like 3300.

You can keep trying to add more power but the problem of altitude combined with weight/load will always be there

There is little to gain on the intake side, I doubt changing the manifold would even be noticed, I cannot advise that.

What results have you had with the supra intakes?
With the cam,head and headers it may make enough of a difference. What about the gearing? Stock used sounds cheaper. What do you think.
