There is a calculator where you punch in your gears, tire size and I believe transmission ratio and it figured you speed.

I thought I had it marked.

On a Dyno at 4872rpm in low range in 5th gear I can do 62mph.

That does seem high to me.

What is the difference in rpm at 60mph for 4.56s and 4.88s ?

Here is a real nice chart.

Not what I was looking for, but just what I needed.

Did you fill up in Reno? I know when I was running up there a lot my '90 always ran better on the way home, as well as got better mpg's when filling up in Reno. You also tend to not climb as fast between Reno and Truckee as you do from Sac to the summit.

How open is your cat back exhaust?

Assuming you have a 5-spd trans
The 4.88's and 30's is going to put the rpms a bit high, 32's would be a better match.

If the 30's are new, and you don't want to buy bigger tires, 4.56 gears would be a better choice, and would allow you to run 31's in the future and would put at stock ratio for the 31's.

Is Dave'z quote for in vehicle installation, or is the price just installing the gears in the rear third and IFS section that you bring up to him?

Cruising along the trail at 1000rpm's is likely going to require dual cases, or regearing the single case to 4.7's, and then still likely to run a bit higher than that. If you find you are stalling on the trail when crawling, adjusting the idle to about 1500rpm, should help.

"Did you fill up in Reno?"

I used 3/4 of a tank getting there and 1/2 tank getting home.

"How open is your cat back exhaust?" 2 1/4" all the way back.

"Is Dave'z quote for in vehicle installation, or is the price just installing the gears in the rear third and IFS section that you bring up to him?"
I'd just take it to him and pick it up later. The gears are rebuilt.

I'm not against taller tires and lower gears.
My tires are about a year old, but my tire guys are the best. I had a set of A/Ts that were about a year old and they exchanged them for a set of M/Ts for $260.00.

I'm sure they will do the same again.I use American Tire Co.
I don't know what tire size will work well for me. The 30's work pretty darn good for what I do.

I want to keep the same type of 3rd members.
I tried pulling out a small tree last year and all 4 tires left rubber marks on the asphalt.

Righr now at 3000rpm I'm going 71mph.
On flat ground I could easily use taller gears so.
I know everything is a trade off.

This is going to be almost $2000.00 up grade including new tires. I've got to get it right.

I can sell my truck easily for $5000.00 and for $7000.00 I could get into a nice newer, more powerful truck.

If you can really "easy" get $5k for your truck, you must be in a much better market than here ;-)

One note, if you do go larger on the tires, carefully look at the weight you could be adding, that unsprung difference can matter as well. There is a lot of variance between mfrs and styles; if you stay as skinny as possible that can help.
In BFG MTs, the diff between a 33x12.5 and 33x10.5 is 9 lbs!

In my experience, w/ these motors your are definitely better overgeared than undergeared, I've found the best power efficiency around 32-3500. Not sure how that equates to fuel efficiency though.

With 200+ Billion electrical parts, the world most complicated machine is inside your own skull.

Question Reality.

Yeah, his truck would be worth 5k up here if there is no rust on it, maybe more. Clean yota's are worth a mint up here as well.

With the tires basically new and you like how the truck works now, it should cost you under $500 to swap to 4.56's. There is a rear 3rd listed on Craigslist(Gold Country)for $150. It is located in Penn Valley which is about 80 miles from Woodland. You can also find 4.56 geared 3rds and IFS sections on car-parts.com starting out at around $100.

If you have a basic set of tools and jack stands, you can save yourself a few hundred in labor costs. The front section can be swapped w/o removing the front wheels, and you only need two jack stands to do the rear. You should be able to do it in under 4 hours. A second set of hands is helpful for the front, but it can be done with just one.

Yes for $7k you could likely get into a newer Taco, they don't seem to be holding their value as well as the older generations, might be a built in the U.S. issue. or perhaps just more were sold w/o the 25% import tax as with the older gens. However with a new used car you don't know it like you do your '91, you know everything you have repaired/replaced, and what you did to your '91 you may have to do to the new one.

If you aren't planning on lifting the truck to run bigger than 32's in the future, I think you should be pretty happy with the 4.56's and 30's, given the other performance upgrades you have done. A cheap way to find out would be to pick up the rear 4.56 3rd listed(if still available and actually 4.56 gears), drop it in, and see how the truck feels. If it still feels under powered, than you know you would want to go with 4.88's, or maybe a newer rig.

That's a big help.

Okay I'm looking for a set of 4.56 gears.
The Craig's list was over and I haven't heard back from the other guy's car-parts.com. I need to make a call.

So I'm still looking.

My truck, I believe is lifted from the factory and could handle 32's pretty easily. The 9 1/2" wide tires are just about right for the truck and where I 4 wheel. Wide tires on clay seem to just spin.

Thanks again

The oem height was set to run 31's. On my '90, 32x11.50's on 15x8's with 3.5 BS only rubbed at full lock, or when entering a driveway at speed. After beating down the fire wall, there was no rubbing issue. If you were to keep with the 9.50 width, you likely wouldn't rub with 32's depending on the backspacing of the rims you have.

You might give the local Toyota yards a call and see what they have and how much.

When searching craigslist ads, look for V6 5spds or autos. The V6 equipped trucks and 4-Runners were the ones that came with taller gear. 4.56's gears were part of the 31" tire package for the 5-spd's early on, and later were on auto's with 30's depending. The door plate would have G25 on it for the 4.56 gear code, whereas yours with 4.10's should be G29. The 4th digit on the gear code is for the number of pinions the 3rd member has.
