Russell,
Because I love you, you know I'll support what ever choice you make.
I would (but I'm not you) see what Roxie needs, sell the big Red Chevy and go from there.

My experiance on adding a turbo in CA...

It took me a few weeks to round up parts and build the engine.

Two weeks to do the swap and get everything set up.

Getting smog legal was not that hard.

I had a reliable daily driver while I did the swap. This was my third turbo swap.

I had plenty of spare time, weekends and nights to do the work. Six to eight weeks start to finish while working a full time job.

Possible to build a turbo engine and bolt the carb on it. You can always add the turbo parts later.

Kevin,

What year was this? Just curious because things have changed a bit over the last couple of years. I'm not saying this would, or wouldn't, be any more difficult than any other swap. The BAR refs just aren't much fun right now, to be honest.

If you're gonna fix it, turbo it at the same time. On the smog issue, I'd use all the donor emission parts, including the underhood vapor valves and canister, and all the donor ignition. If the donor year is equal to the recipient year or newer, the state should be happy. I'd just smile and look at them and say "It's the same 4G54B engine and it hooked up just like the old one .

I did the swap about 5 years ago. The inspector was also an instructor on smog inspections... Kind of the like the Darth Vader of smog. I did have to go back a second time for a couple of small items. And he went through every detail of the swap, including pulling out the manuals on the donor engine.

Don't know if it's changed, but I was OK as long as I followed the regulations. I got dinged for having a non stock cross over pipe and too many braided stainless steel hoses. He let the hoses slide, but the crossover pipe had top go back to stock and my MDS box was missing its CARB sticker, so it had to go.

What won me points was the install was clean looking and everything was hooked up. It also was running very well.

This guy was in Santa Barbara, I'm sure experiance varies depending on who you get. Never know... If I tried it again if they would bust my chops or not. I moved so I'm not trying again.

The smog station in SB is part of the community college so the ref was using my swap to train other refs and auto techs.

Tanks for the insight, Kevin.

This part has not changed. If it LOOKS like it belongs in there, they tend toward ALLOWING it in there. My run at it is coming soon.

Sorry for the hijack...

"Hi, Jack!"...as he was carted off...

No worries, Jon. That's what this thread can lead to, and I welcome the exchange. If the park management will let me, I may pull the head tomorrow afternoon, following work. It's supposed to snow in P'ville this week and I don't care for wrenching in the snow..then off to Denver, CO for next week.

On the one hand, I hope my Raider repairs are simple. On the other hand, I really like Colin's truck from the pics he's sent...and the extra parts!!

None of the pieces I removed from Roxy the Raider last weekend should be reinstalled. All three heads that I have are cracked, the exhaust manifold came off in three basic pieces, and the valve cover had a stripped bolt for the throttle cable.

Writing from Denver, CO, I am making arrangements to see Colin's Mighty Max this weekend...especially the cache of parts he has.

Will I like a MM Turbo and will it hold 33s? One can only speculate until I see it up close.

bummer about the cracked heads, but don't give up on roxy.
sounds like a family pet.
if the max is a runner and registrateable(has good papers and will smog), it would be easier in the short term.
wrenching in the snow and rain is for kids. remember?
