I think the gauge leaked internally. Look at the picture of the blown gauge and notice the corrosion on the "0" peg.

notice the corrosion on the "0" peg. Duly noted. Wondered about that some. Is there any chance the gauge was interfering with the action of the fpr? Could you identify the various hoses on the fpr? I count 3? In the photo, Rside, Lside, and bottom... Have you demo'ed the gauge yer to investigate failure mode?

I don't see how the gauge could interfere with the pressure regulator unless it leaked to the outside (remember the occasional fuel odor with no fuel leak found).
There are 3 fuel lines connected to the regulator. The fuel rail is split-feed/split outlet, with each rail's outlet connected to an inlet port on the side of the regulator that is connected to a common chamber. The 3rd fuel line (bottom) is the return.
I check the regulator fairly often by observing the gauge at idle whenever I change the oil. I checked it on 2 separate occasions under load on the dyno and it was always smooth and steady.

...by observing the gauge at idle whenever I change the oil... You're not running the engine with no oil, right? That'd be a problem. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> How about depth of the gauge sensor in to the fuel passage?

How about depth of the gauge sensor in to the fuel passage? No, there's plenty of room. Frank
