I couldn't believe my eyes, but the first vehicle to greet me this morning was an '86 Conquest turbo in remarkably good condition..... supposedly the victim of a failed drive shaft that took out the transmission. The engine runs, although I hear some valve train clatter that sounds like collapsed lifters tapping. I haven't done any tests, but the engine appears unmolested.
So, I have a 2.0L Mighty Max that I could put the engine into if it fits ok (not sure what's involved yet)...... or I could wait for a 2.6L SWB and put it in that.
What would you do?
Frank

Check the 2.0 bellhousing bolt spacing. If just the tranny case or output is damaged, tear it down for the parts to beef up the truck 5spd. If you don't want it, I've got dibs on the transplant parts...

Eddy, assuming I understand the engine family, my '89 M/T Mighty Max is a narrowblock. This '86 Conquest 2.6L is a wideblock. So, with a bad transmission, there won't be much I can do with the combination of the turbo motor in the MM, right?
OTOH, if I find a SWB 2.6L w/ A/T, it will have the wideblock and the transmission should bolt to the turbo motor, right? Or, I could pull the bellhousing from the SWB A/T and bolt in the lockup A/T as in Kevin's truck, right?

THe 2.6 is wide, and perhaps some 2.0's, too, but not sure. THere are for sure 2.4 4g6x wideblocks out there. Search for 2.4 swaps on the starquest boards for info.
Best of all worlds is swb a/t with lockup and a turbo. Sweet ride, like it should have been built...

The 2.0L A/T is wide. the M/T is narrow.
Y'all have confirmed my suspicion - time to look for a SWB with A/T. I think I have a lockup A/T on the yard now in a '91 LWB.
How much boost can the OE ECU handle?
Would MS be a better alternative?

Hey Frank while you are looking at the LWB could you check and see how the heads are on it?

Last time I looked, the engine was all there - not sure about the condition of the heads, but I'll look tomorrow and see if the engine is intact.... had no time to leave the office today.

there were only a handful of wide carbed 4g63 that came in 87-88 automatic trucks, and not all automatics are wide. Kind of a weird thing mitsubishi did.

Recon, the entire engine is there. 188k miles.... looks like it was sitting for a while due to a broken crank bolt, so at least it was a running engine until that happened.
If you want the heads, you'd better hurry...... the truck is only a couple of days from being crushed.
