Character does matter. You can often really tell a lot about a person by watching how they treat other people during the course of their day.
If you're at a resturant, for example, and the customers treats the waiter in short tones, doesn't make eye contact, is generally dismissive or even worse, then you know that person is a jerk is real life as well. Even if they pretend to be otherwise to their partners that they are out to dinner with.
People give away their true personality and intentions, if you know what to look for. And since the world is full of A-holes, its not a hard to skill to practice.

Well that reminded me of that one part of the movie "The Presidio" when some guy at a bar thought Sean Connery was a Major instead of a Lt. Colonel.
I too, enjoyed the rest of the article. It just kept going on and on..

I remember some reality show a while back with Richard Branson where in the beginning people were selected to pass a bunch of tests and whoever won would be his assistent or something like that. Anyway, in the first espisode, he dressed up as the taxi driver and it was really funny to watch as the cocky arrogant candidates pretty much thumbed their noses at the "elderly" taxi driver and didn't offer to even help as the guy was having a hard time unloading their bags out of the cab.
What an awesome way to judge someone's character! I don't remember much of that series, but I remember that. It always pays to be nice and courtious and respectful to everyone you deal with.

While I am CERTAINLY NOT a big fan of ole "val" and would like to tell her off w/out her asking me for a drink.... I was just raised to be polite to people. It's just the way we grew up.
