After I replaced Frt/Rr shocks on the Montero and Frt/Rr struts on my Camry I've decided NOT to buy KYB again. Only the rear Montero shocks were banded (seems a common complaint) while the fronts were a struggle to get compressed enough to install - and these were the Gas-a-Just, not the higher pressure Monomax. The Camry's were ordered with installation accessories that proved of such poor quality that I had to use some of the original mount parts. I've learned and agree that KYB stands for "Keep Your Bilteins".

Per KYB, the only reason they band some shocks is to make them fit in the box. The front shocks for a Montero aren't very long even when they're extended, therefore, no band. Not so for the rears, which are quite long when extended.
I weigh 160-odd pounds on a good day, and I can compress the shocks for the front. It's keeping them compressed that's kind of frustrating. Just work smarter, not harder.
Sorry you had a bad experience with KYB. I myself have not.

Just work smarter, not harder. Used a coat hanger (and help from my wife) to hold compression and got it done. How much would it have cost KYB to include a nylon band. On the Camry the included strut retainer nuts were of such poor quality they stripped with correct torque and I had to re-use originals. As well the retainer flats were incorrectly machined too large for the flats on the strut shaft and I could not torque properly as the shaft would slip in the retainer. Emails to KYB were ignored. Why couldn't KYB work smarter so I wouldn't have to work harder?

Johnny B posses' super human strength...alowing him to compress the KYB's. Maybe KYB should put a disclaimer on the box...Something to the effect of.."dont buy these if you are too much of a wuss to compress these shocks" I installed a set of Monomax's on my buddy's 95 LS took a little bit of effort to get those pushed together, but the end result was good.

I agree that getting them in can be a PITA... That part doesn't worry me too much.
What I don line is the valving. Aftermarket gas shocks like Monroe's are too soft and dont hold up. While my KYB's in my opinion are too hard.
Not sure if Bilstein has a set for my 87 4 cyl or not.
I used to run Rancho 9000's. I got a decent ride on the right setting.
Might be time for a change.

I used to run the adjustable Rancho 9000's on my my 85 Mitsubishi pickup and I loved them because I could set them to firm when carrying heavy loads and then adjust them to the soft setting when in offroad situations.
I have since switched to some very high end Bilstiens and while they are nice shocks, I prefer the Rancho's because of there different settings.

I agree on the Monroe's. I put the shocks they offer for my 91 and found them to really weak. Blew the rear out in one wood cutting season and the front would bounce alot when I was pulling the trailer (of course I go faster then I should off-road with the trailer) I found load adjusting monroe's that fit for the front and RV shocks for the rear. Better than before. Going with load adjusting for the rear once I get the coil spacers.

Heathdog,
Have you tried the KYB or other monotube designed shock for your application?

Not yet. I'm cheap and I can charge the Monroe's to my account at NAPA. My white truck is my work truck so I like it stiff (huhuhuh). I got a black one that will be my nice one so I may go with something else for that one.
