Thanks for all the input from everyone, appreciated as always.

I think once I am ready to buy one I will give the Promark Silverback a shot, I like the fact you can buy directly from their site too.

I know it's not a winch, but a Hi-Lift Jack is a great multipurpose tool with winching capability. While it is much slower than a winch, it is much more versatile because it can winch from any angle.

I checked up on a Promark 10k winch for $379, with free wireless remote. How is customer support for them? I will pass on the Smittybuilt since they seem to be considered more or less bumper decoration rather than a useful recovery tool. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I also plan on using my winch every trip out, so I don't want a "It works great somtimes" product.

I was youtubing videos of people being winched out and discovered this Video Music sucks, but cool video of a Pajero winching out a Zu, I am guessing from the spec, its probably a PTO winch on that.

Looks like an electric one. He's got a cord going across the hood. I'd still love to see a PTO winch in action.

Oh, thats a Vauxhall by the way.. lol (rebadged isuzu)

Please read my previous post in this thread about the promark/gorilla 10k winch. Its just as good as any warn and I have had excellent encounters with the customer service.

The smittybuilt winch is one of the most returned winches for massive internal failure according to 4 Wheel Parts Centers. I would really really be careful with these. I have personally seen two grenade themselves. Just my observations.

Interesting comments from 4Wheel Parts especially being smittybilt is their house brand IIRC.

You're correct. 4WP acquired Smittybilt several years ago.

I have a Warn 8274. It's at least 30 years old, if not older. I horse-traded for it. I've spent $95 on 100' of 3/8" cable and $60 on a few replacement parts for it. It's a horse of a winch and has never failed to pull out whatever it's been hooked to. One winching episode involved me having to chain the back of my truck to 2 trees so I could pull a 3/4 ton Suburban out of muck up to its doors. The 8274 made a couple groaning complaints, then hunkered down and did its business.

If you shop C/L and ebay, you'll find them out there. Parts are readily available and they're easily fixed.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...
