I have a 1998 Kia sportage that died on my son. I am able to get it to start after 30 seconds of cranking, but when you drive it, it dies. We changed the fuel filter, nothing. I noticed that the fuel pump relay contacts doesnt kick in until you actually crank the engine. Don't know if that is normal on a kia. It idles great when you get it started. Any ideas where to start?

ok, towed it to autozone and the only code in it was for the throttle positioning sensor. I replaced it, and it still will not start. I pulled the fuel line off and cranked it and it seemed to be throwing a good pressure of gas out, but I still cant get it to start normally. Now it has a miss

ok, checked the timing and it is fine. It still takes about 20 seconds to start, and when you drive it and let off the gas, it dies. I am noticing what smells like old gas, however we had just filled it up the morning before this started. when it idles you can see a miss. i have replaced plugs, wires, fuel filter, and now checked the timing. I'm lost, help please.

You replaced both Coil Packs as well as the cables? How about your air filter? Don't think I have even done mine..hmmm....think I will be checking that out.
Let me know.

ok, heres an update on my ner ending battle. Spoke to a kia tech today who said it was timing, cam or crank sensor. I tore it back down and checked the timing once more. perfect. Replaced the cam sensor, nothing. I hate to buy a crank sensor if that isnt it, because they wont take it back. would that do what i am explaining? cranks for 20 seconds then slowly starts firing until it starts? when it idles there is a slight miss.

dont know if you have fixed the problem yet, but have you checked the compression? (low compression will require longer cranking) checked the air filter? looked at the exhaust coming out?
Try the easy things first.
97 sportage, mostly stock apart from king springs front and rear, monroe shocks, k&n filter, pioneer mp3 cd, rampage 2x 10"subs and rampage amp.
