i have this tailgate from an i'm assuming early 80's yota. can anyone help me figure out what years it will fit? it has the lip on the upper edge but the internal latching mechanism controlled by the handle in the middle of the exterior side. it has the raised "toyota" lettering which makes me think it was from an earlier 80's model. i appreciate any help in figuring this out. i found it on the side of the highway and snatched it up because i knew these are hard to find in decent condition...

Could be 79-83 or it could be an imported tailgate from 84-88.
If you're in the states, it's prob 79-83.

The external latches (best system), was discontinued here in the U.S. with the end of the first gens. The import bed was available with the second gens, but it had the center latch, didn't have the tie downs on the sides, and had the "Toyota" decal instead of the stamped steel.

Yes, absent it being shipped in from Japan after the end of the '83 model year, it would have to be 1st gen 4x4 or older 2wd tailgate. The mid '70's 2wd Toyota's had the stamped gates and IIRC, even the Stout has "Toyota" stamped in the tailgate.

Here is a pic of two import beds(as was the designation for the '84-'88 models), the one on the left was available for '84-'88 models, and the one on the right was pre-'83 models.
