The vertical location threw me for a sec. Looks good though, especially with the ride pieces you're gonna add.

Body Damage is Cool
Motor is torn down and ready for new parts, seals, etc... I have kind of a parts list that I can get over to you lloyd in a pm. I will ramble off some stuff here also just so you guys can mention anything that you can think of while the motor is up on a stand (which makes this WAY easy to work on). There is still a couple of things to yank off like the cams, the gear behind the harmonic balancer stuff like that. mostly minor things are left to pull off but I may start playing with getting the valve stem seals off on a cylinder, also will require me to get a spring compressor of some kind.

here are some pics of this project (I cant believe I remembered pictures) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Here is the plenum with the butterfly valves eliminated

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

these are some pictures of the cams, and one of the cams is off time by one tooth. This will obviously be corrected when I put everything back together.

These cams are good.

Driver side head, inner cam one tooth off.

[Linked Image]

This motor ran real strong and never seemed to have any problems. So this may also be of some good info for Jinstv (probably spelled that wrong, sorry)

Hopefully thats enough photos for you guys. Here are a couple of things I was thinking.

Parts Needed:
- Valve cover gaskets
- Cam seal plugs
- Front crank seals
- Thermostat w/Gasket
- Plenum Gasket (one on there to me should not be reused
- Valve stem seals

Parts we have:
- Rear main seal
- New Crank bolt
- Lifters

I'll PM you lloyd about some more I was thinking and it only depends on your opinion.

Let me know if anyone else can think of anything else

Well, PAJ and I joined forces tonight to get some work done on the engine. Brought some tools I thought we might need and a better camera so we don't post anymore crappy Blackberry camera pics. Did the usual pre-wrenching liquid refreshment. After all, it is warm out. Didn't want to get dehydrated.

PA_JERO already had the timing belt off by the time I got there so we got to work on getting the cams and lifters out.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

We quickly realized though that we are going to be in need of some parts that PAJ mentioned above with the addition of rear cam seals, and the fact that the valve spring compressor I have was not quite large enough to to get the intake valve springs out of there and could only reach a few of the exhaust springs. That and I really don't want to do the "rope trick" on the valves to keep them in place while we're working on the seals. I'm going to source the correct spring compressor and spark plug air compressor adapter while we are waiting for the rest of the parts to come our way. My goal is to put a "tool kit" of sorts together for anyone in AZ needing to do either a timing belt or valve seals on their engines and just pass around as needed. Plus I may need them in the near future if things don't pan out on my engine. But that's different thread...

At any rate, a couple of things we wanted to point out Lloyd for your perusal:

#6 cylinder has a lot of crud in the spark plug hole. Don't know if water somehow got in there from outside, or we have something else going on. Here's #6:

[Linked Image]

And here's how the rest of them look:

[Linked Image]

Also, PAJ wants to know if you want to replace the o-rings in the main water pipe under the plenum. Obviously a liberal amount of RTV was used on this engine.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

The cam seals looked pretty beat up and dry even with the large amount of sealant used on those as well. Had some trouble getting the seals out with all of the sealant. One thing we noticed, and maybe this is normal, but the drivers side intake rear cam seal is different from the rest. It's the same part number in the Mitsu ASA program so I thought this needed a mention.

[Linked Image]

There is no groove for the cam seal to sit in like this:

[Linked Image]

3 cams have this groove for the seal, one does not. Again, not sure if this is normal, but we thought we should bring it up just in case.

So, we need some additional tools and some parts to keep going, but once we get everything, we should be able to progress pretty quickly.

Valve spring compressor and spark plug air compressor adapter ordered. (YIKES! $$)

Amazon is estimating delivery next week though, but I've seen them beat their estimates before. We'll see...

Ball is is your court Lloyd! Need some parts buddy!

When me and Lee worked on that engine we tried to re do as much of those RTV disasters as possible, the ones we didn't get to were the things on the rear of the engine. I'm glad you guys are getting those taken care of.
As for the spark plug hole i can't remember if when me and Pat did the plugs and wires if there was a bad plug boot. The plugs are Denso Iridiums and are pretty new, i would try to keep them safe to be reused ($13 each) but maybe that hole needs cleaned out and new wires installed just to be safe. If the corroded hole is on the coil side you'll need new coil boots, I don't thing we replaced those and if the boot cracks the truck will run like [censored].

Lloyd - It would probably be easiest and quickest if you just order from your preferred online vendor and just ship the parts to my shop so we can guarantee someone will be here to sign for them. I'm a little short on time this week so I won't have much time to run around. I can look up the part numbers on the Mitsu ASA program tonight if that will help.

Toasty - All of the plugs look in really good shape so we will definitely be re-using them. Especially since they're the good ones. The coil/boot looked good as well so it's a bit of a mystery where the crud came from. but I'll re-inspect the next time PAJ and I get together to wrench on this thing.

I called mitsubishi today, !!$5.67!! per valve stem seal, x 24! $136.08 total.

Lloyd, it would probably be easier to buy the parts online and just have them shipped to jinstv's shop. But if you would rather just send the cash you can do that and just get it sent to Toasty's and he could always just run up to the dealer and get everything ordered.

Also if you need part numbers let us know so we can get them to you.

- Back of motor cam seals/plugs
- Valve stem seals
- Front main seal
- Valve cover gaskets
- Also, I just remembered, Oil pan gasket is needed also.
- New thermostat w/ Gasket
- Plenum Gasket
- New O Rings for that main coolant pipe under the plenum, there should be 2 of them and I believe there both the same
