very interesting i wonder if the timing tensioner is bad\getting weak might be a good idea to have him replace that when he does the timing to be on the safe side.

That tensioner was new OEM 9 years ago so it might just be worn out from sitting so long. Good to have it all given a once over before you go way out on the trail.

Also the belt can slip if muddy water got on the belt and was allowed to dry and build up mud on the pulley's teeth.

Seen that. Don't want to have to face it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

They are? Starting when? I believe my mom's 2011 Camry I4 has one.

Body Damage is Cool
(Most) car companies have gone to chain driven engines. Not all though unfortunately. There is still quite a list that are belt driven.

All though the timing stuff was new 9 years ago and hasn't been used really since it can still be bad. The hydraulic tensioner sat in the same position for that length of time unmoved.

I think most higher end cars are chain driven now, and frankly I would not buy a new one that was not. There were issues with chains as well, but car makers have worked those out.

Maybe that is what did it, once I really got on the gas climbing hills and such the tensioner slipped. Light came on heading up those hills...which I first thought was that connector coming un-plugged.....or maybe the sudden shut downs from the connector coming unplugged did it?
