There's a couple of internal differences on a Diamante engine, right? I think I remember a different cam grind at least.
Externally, there's bound to be more than a few differences.

I can't be sure about this, as I never dug into it further than theory, but when I was searching around for a short block, even though the blocks for the Diamante, Kia Sedona, etc.. were essentially the same: All the engines I found in the junkyards were not identical to the Montero. Some of the motor mount bosses, and the bolt holes were in different spots, and AC bolt holes were not drilled in the block.
Hang in there Lloyd, I know what you're going through, and it isn't easy. You'll get it fixed up.

The biggest problem if I recall is that different power band. Seems like someone did the swap and was not happy with the results.

I'm not sure if there were different head designs (valve size, combustion chamber shape, compression ratio) for the various applications, but assuming the heads are the same, swapping the cams and intake/exhaust manifolds should yield the same powerband as the Montero motor has.
It seems like the Montero engines command a premium for some reason, while the same engine in a FWD configuration is far cheaper.
