So why are they listing all these transverse engines for 94-96 Monteros?

Lets see 4.0 Stroker 8,500.00, custom fabbing, 2500.00, portal axles 7,000.00 to handle the power....Just slightly out of the budget. So is a complete motor swap, however desirable.

There are a few 3.8 6G75 motors on eBay - a FWD application might need some parts scrounging and a little extra effort to make it work, but would be way more budget friendly than a 4.0, and the extra 300cc should give a noticeable power increase.

I'll be doing something like this if my motor ever dies.

95 Montero SR
3.8 MIVEC, Advance headers, 2 1/2" exhaust, Magnaflow muffler, OME shocks & rear springs, 2" body lift, 3" tank lift, 4.90s, TRE front locker, factory rear locker, Roger Brown Rock Sliderz, 315/75r16 (35") tires, Sport big brakes

WTF? 1K top dollar? Why the hell are those ratty old 3.5s 1500-2K?

If the AZ crew thinks a newer swap could be done with out a lot of issues, I am in, but we just don't have a lot of cash to play with.

What will be critical is knowing what's damaged and what's reusable on your old engine (metal in the oil isn't a good sign) - if you only need a bottom end and can reuse your heads, I think that would make it a much simpler swap than trying to get the SOHC heads and intake to work in your truck. It's kind of getting into uncharted territory as far as I know, but I think a 3.8 block & 3.5 DOHC heads could make a solid 250hp engine.

Good thinking, Ryan. That sounds like the old intake/wiring/computer and exhaust would be reused. I would love to see this. Maybe PM FrankR about his thoughts.

If you were going to try to get that complete motor to work, yes. The intake would be an issue since the throttle body faces the wrong direction, but the Eclipse motor is a MIVEC engine making 263 hp & 260 lb/ft of torque - that would be a significant upgrade power-wise.

Hmmm, that would be fun, if it would work....and be reliable. Another 25hp would be about right.

I spliced the above...

I hope this is what the furthered discussion is about. It needs to be done. Don't wait on me though, I'm kind of slow.

Charlie already put a 3.8 under 3.5 DOHC heads, ask him. No swap just goes in, Even my '99 3.5 SOHC didn't swap right out for the Sport 3.5 SOHC motor. First thing we need to figure out why his current motor went "rice krispies"
