Got rear ended today (no injuries) on the way home by an '86 Mercedes. It went under my bumper and smashed their hood.

See the two nice indentations from the frame rails and the smashed grill from the tow loop.

may have bent my spare tire mount and I think there is some blue paint on the bottom of my hi-lift.

And if you look closely you may see where some rust was scraped off my frame rail end.

Every once in a while I think I should drive an economy car to work. Then I get rear ended, this it the 4th time, and I remember why I like driving the Montero.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Gotta love the height + steel bumper. There's nothing like real steel to stop momentum, but that Mercedes was pretty stout too. Under the plastic of that bumper is a steel bumper. I used to drive a 1952 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe with wide and chrome bumpers with bumper guards. A mid-90's civic rearended me and they had to total her car, while I only had a smudge of blue paint and a minor dent in mine. I hate bragging about it though, as something similar happened to me in my protege vs. an earlier Landcruiser.

Don't tell me, the driver (most likely a female?) was talking or texting on their cell phone? If so, they got what they deserved, good to see that your Monty came thru relatively untouched. Maybe there is some justice in the world after all...

It takes an uneducated person to make a statement like that, beside being sexist.

I see just as many men texting as females and way more men talking on the phone while driving than females.

Don't know about the texting part. It was a girl, maybe 18, driving her boyfriends mothers car. Boyfriend was in the passenger seat. Mom was out of town although the kids said mom told them they could use the car.

Poor girl was on the verge of tears the entire time we exchanged information and I had to tell her what to write down. Can't imagine it's going to go well when mom gets home.

Body Damage is Cool
As long as the radiator and radiator support is not messed up, it should not cost to much to fix. Look like a grill, hood, and maybe headlight lens and surrounds.

That bumper looks just like mine. Is it a Justice model/WST? If so, I'm kind of surprised the Mercedes looks as good as it does.

I haven't come up with a good way to straighten the spare tire carrier back out yet. I have two Monteros that have taken a shot against the rear door and bent it and now the spare tires hang at sort of an angle to the line of the rear itself.

I had another time where a full size, new Dodge p/u hit my white Raider while I was waiting for traffic at an off ramp. Scratched my bumper, totalled his truck.

I assume it's the door itself that's bent? If so, can it be pushed out from the inside?

Can possibly buy a used door via car-part.com or msrecycling.com too.
