d300 and passenger side drop d44 one thing i will tell you if you use a dana case or atlas like the 300 you will have to cut the floor to make it fit, the gear drive cases are kinda tall unlike the chain driven cases. i have flipped dana 300 in the 89 "savage" chop and ive got a 3" body lift and the t\case is against the floor. no i'm not leaving it that way gotta cut it. I did have a bronco dana 20 which is driver side drop and that fit a bit better but with anything less than a 3" bl the floor will need to be cut to fit it aswell, i bet a atlas would be a fair bit of cutting too. Once you go gear drive you won't wanna mess with anything else so beware. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Is it nessacary to cut the floor for the np231 driverside drop? I have a 2" body lift. thanks for the info this is good info to know. i think I might go with the driverside route. i also heard something somewhere about using atoyota axle and swaping the knuckles to make it a driverside drop, but I know nothing about this.

Toy axles can be "flipped" but if you are swapping t-cases might as well just go passenger side drop to make it easier and less expensive. NP231 goes in without cutting the floor, at least mine did with it?s 2" body lift.

231 will fit no problem size wise its pretty close to the mitsu case. Jb conversions offer a nice SYE for it.

The 231 is Much smaller than the Gen 2 cases and still smaller than the gen 1 case so it should go with no clearance problems on a stock truck. A clocking ring would be good insurance for fitting since you could use the long input cases as well as clocking the case.

Body Damage is Cool
Talks about the Aussie gear for the factory Tcase in another thread has inspired me to dig up this thread.
The stats I got online on some Tcase options:

Gen1 Stock= 1.925:1
Aussie Gear= 2.85:1
Dana 300= 2.62:1
NP231= 2.72:1

Both the 300 and 231 have kits to make them 4:1

Looking at the numbers and what I have been reading and advice the 300 is sounding more appealing. The biggest thing for me is what is going to fit without altering the floor. Custom crossmember is not a big deal. Also making the tcase work for a driverside set up is important. I do like the fact that the 300 will not need a slip yoke eliminator (like the np231) it is a sealed unit. It also looks like the 300 is smaller than the 231 but about 10lbs heavier. Anybody wants to add info to this that would be great. I did alot of research and asked alot of members on here about all the info on the 231 now I need info on the 300. Thanks

I am doing alot of homework with lots of help on figuring out the most straight forward swap of a flipped dana 300 into the montero.

Thanks everyone for your help.

So I went with the np231 case. The speedometer cable will thread on but the cable itself does not match. the mitsu has a round piece with a key style adapter and the np231 is a square adapter. I am going to look into seeing if I can swap a cherokee cable and see if it will plug into the back of the speedo since the mitsu has a square input.

I am looking at getting the tcase swap in a month once I get my shifter and cable linkage set up done.
