Need a Spot
Hello kia forum, first post, been trolling for info for a while. GREAT site!

I have a 1997 Sportage, working on the lift part, then exhuast, but mainly trying to get it smogged right now. Had multipule codes, now only one.

COOLANT TEMP SENSOR - HIGH INPUT

Best i can tell, the NEW temp sensor for the gauge is reading in the 300ohm range at operating temp. The gauge itself picks up signal from 0-60ohms, 30ohms being operating temp. I've verifed that the temerature gauge and wiring to the gauge is functional. Also that the coolant temp sensor is working. Have yet to check the sensor that goes to the computer. From rough "guess-tamations", thats not the problem. Still going to check it though, it is brand new as well.

-Almost forgot to add that the temperature gauge is currently NON-OP, reading cold full time-

Any ideas? Am i destined to hunt down wiring ghosts for weeks? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

thanks guys!

Body Damage is Cool
I may be mistaken, but the gauge sensor is not what the computer reads. It is the larger coolant sensor on the right side of the thermostat housing (looking at the motor from the front of the car).

You might just try to unplug and plug it back in and see if the contacts are dirty.

The small one on the left side of the thermostat housing (it just has 1 wire going to it) is just for the gauge (I think).

Let us know how things work out.

you are correct

the gauge on the dash isnt working though as posted earlier, but the computer is throwhing a code too? Both the gauge sensor and the computer senor have been replaced. Cleared codes and let the computer do a relearn phase. Codes still present. tested the thermostat before installing it as well, popped in boiled water, wouldnt be the first time i got bunk parts from a store
<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
Im wondering, if my water pump isnt functioning properly, it SHOULD throw a code too. But if it doesnt and it isnt working right, the vehicle should be over-heating, which isnt the case. It would be one thing if the thermostat was stuck open and the pump wasnt working. be the hard way to find out.

Also, maybe someone knows better, is there any resistors upstream from the coolant temp sensors that might have gone south???

On a side note, doing the lift on the front this weekend, no more hot-rod rake <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />
Using the springs out of a 4-door hard-top jeep. rears are 15" and fronts are 17". see what happens. going to fab up some say bar links this week hopefully. till then, no highway driving.
I will put the part #'s from the springs up when i get a chance next.

what are you guys doing to lenghten the pan hard rod? I was thinking of possibly doing the "Hacken McChopp" to it. adding the nessecary extra rod lenght and welding it up. then possibly putting a sleeve tube over the extension and welding in place after. IS there any reasons that would make an adjustable pan hard a better option then a solid? other than its adjsutable?

k, think i'll stop writting a novel now <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />
