I have a worsening rear seal on a tiring V6. Going to the trouble of pulling the engine to replace a seal that will probably still leak , I'd rather....disel. Is this a wealthy man project?

Will it bolt up to V5MT1???
Will I need an unavailable sheet metal part between engine and bellhousing???
Will I need to move/reweld mount beams to frame???
Fuel pump? Is it external to tank?
Whole exhaust system?
Gas ain't getten cheaper and I don't need speed as I don't commute anymore, just to the store and camping.
I guess my milage would go from 14 mpg gas to 25 mpg with a diesel????

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just did a 4D56T conversion on an '89 V6 auto Raider with spun bearings. I bought a JDM engine/transmission/transfer case from Soshin Motors off ebay. The engine was more worn than I expected, but generally ok. The systems are mounts, drive, cooling, fuel, wiring, electric, exhaust, and A/C.

Mounts:
The engine mounts were a direct bolt-on to the frame. They placed the engine perfectly.

The V6 auto cross member transmission mounting holes were different. It was close enough that I just drilled new holes. The transfer case torque snubber didn't line up, so I made an adapter for that.

Drive:
The diesel uses a four cylinder transmission. The V6 has the wrong bolt pattern. The clutch cover pieces from the 4 cyl tranny work with the diesel. (The V6 trans looks a lot stouter than the 4 cyl trans. I really wanted to use it but adapting the block and clutch was just not worth it. I almost decided to use a Rover V8 since I had a spare V8 engine and a bell housing I could have adapted to the V6 trans.)

My auto trans placed the transfer case about 3" further back than the diesel/4 cyl trans combo. I had the front driveshaft shortened and the rear one lengthened to fit.

I had also swapped a '96 Montero SR disk brake rear axle. The driveshaft flange was larger on the '96 axle, with a different bolt pattern. The flange inset matched, so I removed the flange and drilled a second set of mounting holes.

The auto transfer case has a different input and output spline pattern than either the V6 or the 4 cyl manual transmissions. The auto rear driveshaft won't work with either manual trans. I used the 4 cyl transfer case.

Cooling:
The V6 radiator lower hose connector is in the wrong place and points the wrong way. I initially cut and welded the lower connector, but ended up getting a 4 cyl radiator. The NAPA hose part numbers listed here in the archives for the radiator and heater hoses worked great.

The V6 fan shroud does not line up with the diesel fan, but the 4 cyl gas engine shroud works. I got them from a salvage yard. The radiator and shroud fit perfectly but the radiator was bad. A new aftermarket radiator had the fan shroud mounting holes about 2" off, so I welded tabs and re-drilled.

Fuel:
The diesel injector pump includes a feed pump that will draw from the fuel tank. No other pump is needed. I removed the EFI pump from the tank and replaced it with a tube and pickup screen. That may not have been necessary, as the diesel pump may be able to draw through the EFI pump. I didn't want to risk it. I took the tank out to do this, then discovered an access panel in the rear cargo area.

I changed the gasoline fuel filter and left it in place. I am in the process of installing a Baldwin diesel filter/water separator in the engine bay. When I get it in I may bypass the original filter.

The fuel filler needs to have the restrictor removed. I started to drill it out with a hole saw, then decided it would be easier to cut the filler with a hack saw, remove the restrictor, and re-weld the filler.

Wiring:
The wiring was straightforward. I used a genuine '89 Raider factory manual. I have put a small push button switch near the key on the column to run a solenoid for the glow plugs. Most of the connectors were the same between engines.

Exhaust:
I welded up a 2.5" SS exhaust using mandrel bends. There is a fair amount of room to run the exhaust. You could use the V6 exhaust if you took the cat out.

A/C:
The diesel came with an A/C compressor, but I wanted to keep the V6 compressor because the hoses were different. I made a bracket to put the V6 compressor on the diesel. It was a demanding project. Otherwise, you would need to adapt the A/C hoses. This is a job for a good A/C shop.

Did you happen to keep the AC mounting bracket from the 4D56? I'm needing one.
Can you provide a link for the Baldwin fuel filter?
I'm putting a new 4D56 into my Mazda B2600i.
What oil pan did you use?
Did you take any pics of your conversion?

My Gen1 has a later model 4d56 in it, and it has a 5vmt1 attached to it. SO... depending on the one you get, it may bolt up. You'd prob need to get the specific bellhousing.

great info, thanks <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
I wonder if our Aussie friends could look up part numbers, like that bell housing? I want to stay with V5MT1. I've seen both trans. on youtubes, parts gotta be out there. Need Aussie friends.
Still thinking,,,should say, actually been putting off leaving CA. FL would be for awhile, where i think a conversion would give me no emmissions headaches.

I forgot to mention the air cleaner. I used the original with some silicone adapters from Verocious Motorsports.

The fuel filter is for a '96 Cummins. I haven't finished installing it yet. I had trouble finding a remote mounting bracket for it so I made one. I think it would be better to use one that fit a readily available bracket like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Moeller-Separating...8654&sr=8-2

I hadn't thought there was a 4 cyl bell housing for the V6 transmission. I would very much like to have one of those!

I took some pictures this morning.

I still have the 4D56 A/C bracket and compressor. I used the tensioner that came with it, so that is missing. I'll ship it to you for $30 if you still want it.

The compressor and/or bracket are both up for grabs. Send me an address and something for shipping. I've got plans for the PTO.
