I remember over the winter I went to Reading PA to look at a 90LWB Montero with a buddy of mine. I looked at it and aside from normal rust here and there and a few oil leaks. The part that caught my eye was the trailer hitch. It was one that bolted to the 4 bolt mount and bolted to the frame. Was that factory? Or was this one of those John Baker hitches I heard so much about? It looked extremely stout and was tucked up behind the bumper enough to not drag on obstacles. I would love to find one to put on my LWB, but I am not sure where to look. Russ?

Use the search function - towing with Monteros has been covered many times, including everything from frame mounted hitches to the 4-bolt mounted style that you mentioned (which is what I use).

I wasn't asking about towing, I just wanted to know the brand of hitch. I already searched and found no pictures. I already have a standard Curt receiver.

Funny you mention seeing one on a 90. I found a 90 in a salvage yard with a frame mounted hitch like you describe. It is a very stout set-up. I had to make brackets to do the additional brackets that mount it to the frame. Plus had to clearance some of the metal to get the thing to fit. Quite a difference in the frame between the 6 cylinder and the 4 cylinder.

I've had a few of these through my hands, some marked John Baker, others as Valley Products. I'm sure there were others. I have a Baker unit welded up to my Raider, very stout.

that looks like the one on my V6. I got it off a LWB. Looks like you had to grind off some to mount it. Mine originally bolted up inside that flimsy OEM bumper, so was pretty useless added wieght. Mine is now integral to my home made bumper.

I'll look for some of these hitches, two requests now...
I swapped one away last year for a smile, next ones will be more $$.
@ Dave, I did section out the corners of the wings. Welding to the frame gave this arrangement much better resistance to rolling out under loads. I've previously had Smittybilt and Baker pieces that were either ball mount or receiver type and only used the pintle mount. I bent all three towing my water tank trailer off highway. My present setup laughed at them other wimpy ones.

That hitch works great. Towed another one home yesterday, 130 miles. Use it all the time with my Ford Courier bed trailer, loaded like crazy with scrap sometimes. The Gen 2 disc are the only thing I recommend if you are going to be pulling any weight. [img][image] http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt64/fastfoodvw/The%20Shogun/Shogun7.jpg[/img][/image]

Russ, next time you get a baker hitch mind holding onto it for me? Rich...I know this thread ceased over 4 years ago. I have a 4-bolt John Baker ball mount hitch for sale...
