I just scheduled replacement of the timing belt for friday.

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> $800!
I told them that I believe the camshaft seals need replaced (as it is leaking oil onto the alternator like crazy) but they said it rarely needs to be done.

I dunno.
if I get her back and she is still leaking like mad, I am not going to be too happy.

They should be able to figure out what it is pretty quickly while they are in there.

I don't know where $800 came from - this 3.5 SOHC is the easiest of all the Mitsubishi V6s to do the timing belt on - you don't even have to remove the A/C bracket I hear!! That $800 better include the belt, waterpump, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, grenade pin adjuster, front seal at least.

If it is the camshaft seal it shouldn't be too difficult to replace that while it's all apart.

$800 is the pump, belt & labor @ my local firestone.

Mitsubishi wanted over a grand for the same service.
I said, uh... NO THANK YOU, HAVE A NICE DAY.

I don't have the time or tools to do it myself... I wish I did.

What are your thoughts on the cam seals? You think they are the likely to be leaking?

Tires look great! Is it lifted at all or is that stock height?

I would suggest doing the cam and crank seals. My 98's were extremely brittle when I did my timing belt 2 yrs ago. (185k miles on them) They cracked as soon as I touched them.

Also they should replace the idler and tensioner pulleys. I also replaced the hydraulic tensioner for extra insurance, but that's another $100..

If changing the timing belt on a SOHC 3.5 is 'easy'...I'd hate to see hard! By the time I got done doing it myself, $800 sounded like a steal. I personally would be hesitant to trust Firestone with this job, but hope it works out for you!

Man that is one beautiful looking montero, I love the tires...those gen 2.5s have such a nice body style.

About a month ago i was able to get the dealership where i bought my 95 montero SR to install a new timing belt and pump for free (i paid for parts). They screwed up and told me it was a 1996 montero, after i bought it i found out it was 95, i told them i would return it if they didnt do the work smile

Ummm....3.5 DOHC.

Well, maybe "hard" isn't quite the right term - how about "time consuming and technically demanding"?

I didn't know firestone did T belt jobs??? I'd sure change all seals and suprized they didn't suggest that. Oil leaking on a brand new T belt would not make me very happy. Mitsu dealer should have all the best OEM seals and any special tools to do the work on hand. Might be worth the exra $200. They will also put the harmonic balancer on right.
