They should be able to figure out what it is pretty quickly while they are in there.

I don't know where $800 came from - this 3.5 SOHC is the easiest of all the Mitsubishi V6s to do the timing belt on - you don't even have to remove the A/C bracket I hear!! That $800 better include the belt, waterpump, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, grenade pin adjuster, front seal at least.

If it is the camshaft seal it shouldn't be too difficult to replace that while it's all apart.
