In a nutshell....

someone HIGH up decided to tell the ATF to MAKE gun dealers sell guns to suspected traffickers, even when the dealers protested.

Guns end up in mexico.

Guns end up killing mexicans, and us officials.

Gun owners are constantly getting the blame for "assault rifles ending up in mexico"

All the while someone high up in the justice department was helping the "problem" along the whole time.
