The price of those heads are really not badly priced. Considering the head for the 2.6 (correct me if im wrong) is nearly $500 for the one head. Obviously that is loaded I think. I've never bought one personally so I can't say for sure.

Between your block and the old Lloyd block we might be able to get one of them operational again. Maybe one cheaper then the other, What machine shop are you gonna be using in mesa? I think I mentioned them to you before but I used Johnny Rackleys Automotive Machine Shop and they were very reasonably priced and did good work. Just a heads up. Lets git R done cause we have to set up a big trip so I can go blow up the rest of my CV's so my D44 can go in with my ARB. I wish. Spool...ARB, who cares, there like the same thing right???

PAJ - Yeah, I was surprised to see they weren't as expensive as I thought. Still, if I can repair them cheaper than that myself, that is the route I will go. I'm working on my garage this week so I can make room for working on the engine, and I'm cruising CL seeing if I can find a used engine stand. Hopefully we can rip this thing out of here and get it on the stand so I can strip it down and see what is up. It would be nice to have it to a machine shop while we are working on Lloyd's engine but I don't know if we can get it done that quickly. Sounds like Lloyd's parts should be in soon.

ryanY - I read a couple posts about that engine maybe being the same, and even the heads being similar, but I could not find where someone confirmed it. Checking on car part for full engines anyway they list the hyundai sedan, and the kia sportage as having the same engine. And around $1500. Most of the blocks listed were listed as cores, so I don't know the condition, but at $500. If we can confirm the long block is the same on the sedan and the sportage, there would be another source for parts.

EDIT: I just looked it up again, and car-part is listing between 2002-2006 Hyundai XG series and Santa Fe, Kia Sedona, Sorento and Amanti. So if it is indeed the same block as ours, there is more to choose from for parts.

I have an engine stand you can use for as long as you need it.

Thanks a ton John B. That will help a bunch. I gotta get with PAJ and see what his schedule is, and maybe try to hook up with you at some point this week to borrow that stand. Need to try to squeeze this rebuild in between Lloyd's engine, and PAJ's valve stem seal work if at all possible.

Check out Mitsubishi Diamante 3.5's, Don't think they came in a DOHC but the block will be the same. Those cars go cheap and so do their engines, Also check for rolled sports, I found one a year ago for 500 and it only had 60k or something on it. Sports are SOHC as well but If the block is what you're after it's the same.

Hey J, just let me know when I can help you out. I have been REALLY busy these last 2 weeks. 70 hours last week and probably 65 hours by the end of tomorrow, but hopefully tomorrow is the end of it. So if you need a hand tomorrow evening or even at some point this weekend let me know. I have an engine hoist to yank that motor out and like I said we should be able to get it pulled out in less than half a day, hopefully . Really until we have parts for lloyds motor we can do what we can with yours. It would be really nice to get yours back on the road, so we can just chop away at yours little by little, or at least get your situation narrowed down to what you really need to do. Either buy a long block or figure out what we can salvage from what you have, Block, Heads, etc... We'll get it going though.

No problem PAJ. Been pretty busy at work myself, so I know how it gets. I made some room in my garage to work in. Still need to organize my tools, but it looks better than it did the last time you stopped over.

I may tear into it again tonight and at least get the radiator and accessories off of the front of the engine and start peeling the wiring back from it to get it ready to pull. Then maybe we can get together at some point this weekend and pull the engine out. I stopped by that machine shop you told me about. No one came out from the shop, but it looks like they only do head work, and brake rotors and such. I stopped by the other shop in Mesa and they want $1100 to do the machine work, but they don't do the assembly . So my search continues either for a machine shop that will do the assembly, or for a good condition short block from a yard somewhere.

Ok. I'm compiling a list of possible short block donors after doing some reading today. This is what I've come up with so far while searching car-part.com as far as vehicles and year ranges that may work. This isn't a definitive or confirmed list, but just what I've found that is available right now that cross references. I'm hoping this will serve as a future list for anyone else finding themselves in this position.

2002-2005 Kia Sedona
2003-2006 Kia Sorento
2003-2005 Hyundai Santa Fe
2002-2004 Hyundai XG Series
1997-2004 Mitsubishi Diamante

There may be other years and models to add to this list later, but I'm hoping once PAJ and I get my engine out, I can take a bunch of pics and head to the yards to see if any of these vehicles listed above will serve as donors for our short blocks.

JohnB: HF has their 1000lb engine stand on sale for $60 right now, so I'm going to pick that up today. Just can't pass up a sale. I may still need to borrow your stand in the future if I find a usable short block from a salvage yard. Then I can swap things over from my engine to the new(er) short block, and keep my short block on my stand for a future rebuild if that is the route I need to go.

Anyone know off hand what size bolts I will need to bolt the engine to the stand? I need to pick some of those up this weekend also if PAJ and I are going to rip this thing out.

PA JERO: I'm going to do some prep work tonight and tomorrow so let me know what your schedule looks like this weekend. Hopefully we can get together and get this thing on the stand this weekend, and then I can pick it apart over the next week in between working on Lloyd's engine to see what is wrong with it and know what route I need to take (heads, short block, whatever)

If anyone feels like making the long trek out to the far east valley this weekend you are welcome to come by to point and grunt, and carry on like a bunch of men. Give me a heads up and I will be sure to have plenty of refreshments on hand. The taco bell is only about 15 minutes away for some volcano tacos.

Got the front end of the engine torn down, but that's about it. Apparently somewhere along the way this weekend I thought it was a good idea to be either hammered or hungover for the entire weekend. I am regretting that decision now.

So, I haven't gotten much done except get a headache and a lighter wallet.
