Forgot about Lloyd's old engine. Can't hurt to pull the valve cover off and see what kind of shape it is in. I'm with the kids this weekend, but maybe I can check it out next week sometime once I get deeper into this engine.

Come take the whole thing, I'm starting to need my garage back!

I pooped down the intake, that?s why Lloyd was able to purchase the truck so cheap.

Now that's some serious engine sludge.

I've been slammed at work WW, otherwise I would have made it over your way by now. I can see if I can make room for Lloyd's old engine over here and borrow another stand from JohnB so I can scavenge parts from it if I need to. Sans poop preferably. My garage is getting really small with my kids beds still in there.

Got my engine down to the block, and have a buddy searching for a donor short block in the yards. He's been just as busy as I have, so haven't heard back yet. I may take the heads to a machine shop to have them checked out and do a valve job on them. Passenger side head was pretty sludged up and there is a lot of carbon on the valves. Then I'll do the stem seals and updated lifters myself to hopefully save some cash. This Montero has been almost as bad as my ex-wife for dumping money into for no return on investment.

Need to order a full gasket kit, stem seals, oil pump and some other odds and ends come payday so I can be ready when a good short block is found. I have no idea if the one I have is shot or not, but it leaks from just about everywhere, and I don't trust it now.

I've been thinking about ordering my lift kit and putting it on before the engine goes back in. What do you guys think? Good idea? Did you guys order the "ultimate" blocks or just the standard blocks? Anyone have an invoice I can reference for the proper part numbers?

I'm trying to fund raise for that right now as well The guy hasn't returned my e mail or answered my calls yet.

That truck is the same one I looked at a few months back. It's from Minnesota (or maybe it was Wisconsin, I can't remember for sure) and is a total disaster. I have never seen so much rust on everything. The rear axle and frame rails are measurably thinner then they are on my truck. The "minor" front brake work he mentions is that he ran the pads down to the metal backing plates, then kept driving it. The front left rotor's inner face is literally as thin as a dime and I bent a little bit by hand. The pad (or what was left of it) slipped out on him and jammed back into the caliper on the wrong side and I am pretty sure the piston cracked as a result. That's the only place I could determine the brake fluid could be coming from. Then there's that "recently" he talks about in the add. That was 40K miles ago and it looks like the work was done by an amateur or at least a very sloppy mechanic so I wouldn't trust it too much.

Sure it's $1200, but just to get driving it will need new front rotors (and probably rear, they were very thin too), at least one new caliper, fuel pump, most of the rubber and bushings underneath, and a complete work through to see if it really will run. In a short time, it will probably need the timing belt again, and he said they did not do the water pump when the belt was done last time. Assuming that's it, then there's a lot of rust rehabbing to be done. Some spots on the frame, axle, control arms and front suspension were bad enough that I would be worried about stress cracking and complete failure. I know Toasty and some of the others here have the skill to take it completely apart and put it back together again, but then I am not sure that this particular truck is worth the effort....

Jinstv really needs an engine. In theory, he could scrap the rest.

If it weren't for the obvious lack of maintenance on the rest of the truck I would consider buying it for the engine and parting out the rest to try to recoup some money. I think how an owner takes care of the entire truck is how they take care of the engine. Not sure I would trust the condition of the engine on that one. I haven't had any time to drop the pan on my engine and inspect the bearings. My block may be good for all I know and I just need a replacement cam and rocker, and just re-seal it. Never been this far into an engine before, so I'm not quite sure what to look for when I finally get the time to dig into it again.

Plus, I've had my share of working in the heat lately, so coming home to work in my hot garage after being in the sun all day just isn't very appealing right now. Thanks for looking out for me though JohnB.

On a side note, has anyone come across an invoice for the 4crawler 2" lift kit? I'd like to order mine this week and could use some part numbers to go by.
