Yep, that's what I meant to say. I've been looking at the Lincoln MK VIII fan. It's a 2 speed that is rumored to pull over 4000cfm in high speed mode. Going to measure my radiator when I get home to see if it will fit. I think a good e-fan on the radiator, plus a smaller 7" fan on the oil cooler wired to a toggle in the cab for additional cooling off road just might be the ticket. The Lincoln fan is reported to be 5.5" deep, but some of the shroud can be trimmed back if needed.

EDIT - Correction. The Lincoln fan is 6.15" deep, but the shroud can be trimmed down to 5.25" But from what I'm reading needs a LOT of start up current to run it. Start up voltage has been reported to be above 100A. Ouch.

The Taurus fan is reported to pull 3800cfm max and is 4.85" deep. Not sure about startup current on that one yet.

Mine measures just about 4.5", certainly not any more than that.

As far as start-up amperage, I would think that 100 amps for a fan would be very high. That's 1200 watts. The fan in my roof top a/c unit at the house runs on less than 400 watts, and start up on that couldn't be more than double. At any rate, that's what your battery is for, so your alternator doesn't see that kind of hit. In any case, the start up load would only be momentary.

A source for an engine oil cooler fan might be from a motorcycle junk yard. Let me know what you find.

Thanks for checking on that for me JBFP. With that measurement neither fan will fit, but I need to measure my shroud when I get home and see if there is some way to graft the 17" Taurus fan, or the 18" MK VIII fan to a stock Montero shroud.

I had a hard time believing the inrush current could be that high also, so I found a video on youtube of someone checking inrush current with that fan on a shunt, and sure enough, the inrush current spiked over 100A. Now, that can be combated with a variable speed controller like Delta Current Control with lessens the strain on start up. Still reading, but I'd like to make this work. I could just drop the radiator 2" and just say the heck with it, but that would be too easy.

Found this post while searching for aux oil cooling ideas:

Aux cooling fans

Found the same fan on ebay for $25, but the motorcycle fan might be a lower cost alternative. Good call.

I know the Volvo fan fits and it definitely has the power to do the job.

I dunno. If it were just me, I'd move the radiator and be done with it.

Gen 2's have an aluminum core radiator, and that's why they only have two rows. An aluminum core will dissipate heat more efficiently than a brass core one...far more efficiently. My feeling is that there's plenty of air flow through the radiator on these trucks with the pulley driven fan.

What I'd like to see would be a higher volume water pump. I've spoken to a couple of people that I trust on the issue and their opinion was that the flow rate isn't as good as it could be. How do I solve that?

Gen 2's are brass core still, they are taller than the old 3 row. The pulley driven fan doesn't flow well at low speeds and neither does the water pump. These trucks are High RPM machines engineered for racing and adapted for the streets, you?ll need to pick something to upgrade for low RPM high load driving. Your ideal driving RPM for the 3.5 is 3000, if you can maintain sub 5mph around 3k you won't need to upgrade the cooling system.

Otherwise upgrade your low RPM air flow with a electric fan. Or upgrade your low RPM water flow with a 55GPM water pump part number WP336S, or send an OEM pump to Flow Kooler and see if they can change the impeller on it for better flow.

I don't see a model number or reference to what vehicle it comes out of, and the pics in the thread are all dead. The photobucket page linked in the first post no longer exists.

Thats easy do the one thing no one ever wants to do ...take a good brass rad down to a good radiator shop and pay good money to have a bigger radiator made ... The pump is good .. Its just the cheap fast food Auto zone stuff has shity impellers ... I blue print the pumps on all the race stuff I do that helps ... Euro car fans pull way to many amps to use... Dont buy the Euro car fan BS....its a fad

Not trying to sound like a jurk John ... Get the mother of all radiators made for the old girl and move on the next problem ...

The more I think about this, the more I think I'm going to just relocate the radiator and use the stock clutch fan for now. I still have too much to do before worrying about cooling mods. That can wait until next spring.

Sometimes I come down with a bad case of "while I'm in there".
