2 cams doesnt make a engine more comp[licated.... They just make more power... I'd never swap a dohc for a sohc engine..

OK, so what I'm getting from this thread is the engine is not a good candidate. My engine is not running that smoothly and noticing fuel consumption going up. Think I'll start with a compression test and a tune-up. I'll post compression numbers when I have them. Thanks everyone!! ~ Jon

I had forgotten how long they were. I forget how long I am from time to time, too... Buy Curtis' rig. You'll be happeh. He don't build junk neither.
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

The engine in my 94 Montero SR is getting tiiirreed and starting to look at options for replacement. Thinking about rebuild but the truck is my daily drive and needs to be running and I have not done that much engine work. On CL there is an engine with drivetrain from a 98 Montero with 65K miles on it, Is this a better engine than current? Is this engine a straight swap or are there a bunch of hops to go through? Any advice is much appreciated Thanks, ~ Jon Tired? how many miles? As the other guys said- Plus these had the Butterfly intake issues- I got my truck- ordered all the parts listed on the write up here somewhere- I changed the lower intake and plugs wires and coils- I have about 3300 invested in truck and it runs great now. It will be a while before I trust it as much as my 1990 montero LS.

Don't forget that Toyota V8 swap. That's what I'm going to head toward as time moves forward. Have to get my mileage out of the 3.0 rebuild (at 15k now) but figured the V8 5 speed auto were a good hedge against the future smog regs.

It must suck living in Cali and watching those big rigs dump all that crap everytime they take off. Meanwhile they scrutinize your rigs to no end.

after some thought and being advised by the englishman in the past, I have to agree. The DOHC is possibly a little simpler. I keep thinking about all the shims I had on my Toyo MR2 engine. Mitsu has VLA, (right?) that said I think there are less moving parts in the DOHC than SOHC which = greater mech advantage. Rebuild will be a much simplier and less expensive , headach free solution.
