Engine Swap #1028723 05/18/11 03:08 PM

The engine in my 94 Montero SR is getting tiiirreed and starting to look at options for replacement. Thinking about rebuild but the truck is my daily drive and needs to be running and I have not done that much engine work.

On CL there is an engine with drivetrain from a 98 Montero with 65K miles on it,

Is this a better engine than current? Is this engine a straight swap or are there a bunch of hops to go through?

Any advice is much appreciated

Thanks,

~ Jon

I believe the engine, harness and ecu will be required.

Is it better? Depends on what you're looking for. The 94-96 3.5's have more HP but are also more complicated being DOHC designs versus the SOHC design of the less powerful 98+ models.

I concur, the less complicated the better. When this motor goes, I am actually gonna bolt in a Golen stroker block (4.6L) for a Jeep.
That 4.0 is bulletproof and darn near submersible with a snorkel (dont ask me how I know that). And at the same time you can swap in a Jeep transmission and NP231 which are plenty for these trucks and time tested and proven.
I beat the heck out of my TJ and never ever had any trouble with that setup. And they are soooo easy to work on. Yes they kinda suck on gas but they will get you out there and back reliably.
And in another thread is the mention of a Taurus fan swap, and thats a very common swap on Jeeps too. I had a switch rigged up on mine to kill the power for deep water or mud crossings so it didn't burn up the fan motor.

Hey, good luck with your 'bulletproof' swap. I'll be out wheeling my '95 SR with a "tired" 181,000 miles 3.5 DOHC while you're trying to get everything installed.

Did I mention my '95 is pretty 'bulletproof' too?

Do a compression test and post up the numbers. If it's as tired as you say, there's something wrong. How much does a '94 weigh again? Don't forget to take that into consideration.

That should be the 214hp 3.5, and the weight is like a lightly loaded lwb gen1. Maybe less than that. Should scoot pretty good. If it's tired, is it misfiring at higher rpms? The coil packs on these get tired fairly early, or have a fairly high failure rate. A tuned butt can feel it along with a hand on the shifter to get the engine vibration beat. Old injectors need cleaning, too. A can of Seafoam in the tank, burn that out, then repeat.

The later model engine is a complicated swap. Fix yours. Rent a cheapie car for any down days. By the week is pretty cheap. You can do a lot of fixin' in a week with two weekends in there.

The Gen I Montero/Raider engine bay will accept a transplant engine about 25 inches long. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Think 302HO! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

OOOOH, rxnhead, now you got my special place thinking. I think this is gonna be the crawler I keep this time and I'd really like to have a fuel injected simple swap and I know Im one of the few but I like manual crawlers with Heavy duty clutches.
I like to use a hand throttle with my feet working the clutch and brakes. I will probably end up going the way of a Currie 9" in the rear and a super stout 44 built by Dynatrac with Ox lockers in both ends.
No air or power lines to worry about and they will take a beating when properly built.
For anyone thinking of doing an SAS with a Rubicon 44, you might want to think again. While normal shafts are okay in them, I have seen a few grenade with upgraded shafts if you get to bouncing or in a spot with all the power required of one wheel.
I had never thought about a 302HO though? Will the Tremec 5 speed fit and still have enough room to get a transfer case in there? And what one would you go in search of? I'd like to keep 4.88's in the axles and go to at least a 4:1 crawl ratio maybe lower. Im a major rock junkie.
You can have that mud, you spend a couple of hours playing and 2 days cleaning. When I figure out how, im gonna post up some pics of my old Jeep crawling at Rausch Creek in the "rock garden" (basically small suv sized rocks, pointy as all get out, with the occasional giant hole to fall in if you dont have a good spotter smile.
I wish there were more spots in the midwest that offered more than mud and sand.

Straight 6 aint gonna fit in a montero or raider.

You should just buy my raider, and be done with it. It's got pretty much everything you want.
