this would apply to ANY rare glass , not just the moon roof .....

so I have a couple of these for my Trekker . Both are ok , but have scratches on the glass ... So I decided to try "fix" the worst one ..

This one was from a unit I parted a few years back .. It was rolled , as you can see the deep scratches on the glass .



so first .. I put some tape on the back side , so I would know ware I'm working



then I brought out the DA and started to sand it with 220



it as far as I got today ..

There's going to be a lot of folks who are going to love you for this one Corey. Moon glass is pretty rare anymore for Yotas.

got a little bit more done today

wet sanded with 400G



wet sanded with 600G



wet sanded with 800G



and removed the tape



just need to polish to remove the haze

HOLY CRAP.

I had no idea you could do that!

I mean, it does make sense now that I think about it... just never put 2+2...

I spent a few more hours sanding .. and polishing .. 6 hours total so far (wow a lot of time!!)



reflection is awesome , but there are still some haze spots .. captured pretty good on the camera , but you really have to "look" to see them .. and I think on top of the roof , no one would ever notice

overall , I'm pretty happy .. no more scratches , which were visable from far with the roof open , and also visable from looking inside up at the roof .. you no longer can see them , and the minimal haze , is not visable either from the inside

All this gets me to wondering, what does it take to install a "moon roof" in a second or third generation p/u that never had one in the first place? Assuming you could find a donor with all the right parts. -- Matt

Might be easier to go with an aftermarket sun-roof kit. I put one in a VW pickup once, no0t too bad an install. Kit came with a 2-piece frame and template and it was pretty easy to cut out the sheet metal. Then drop the outer frame down in the hole with sealant around the rim, then the inner trim/frame up from below and tick in the headliner and it was done.

It seems the hard part with the factory moon roof is that is is pretty much built into the roof, so would be a lot harder to remove and then you would need to make a template and figure out how to get it re-installed.

doing a "factory" moon roof would require a whole roof section .. the factor moon roofs are rienforced , not like a "jobber" sun roof you just cut a hole .

this was the whole reason I "restored" my trekker cab .. because it had the factory moon roof .

I havent done anymore with the glass .. I'm just trying to get the trekker back together right now
