Clutch/flywheel ID... #1029014 05/24/11 02:18 AM

I have a '93 Toy p/u that needs a clutch.
Door says mfr date is 10/92.

Marlin's site says they have 2 diff kits, 1 89-10/92, other is 11/92 to '95. for 2 slightly different size flywheels.
But when you go to order, it is selected as just "89-92" and "93-95".

I called and talked to a guy at marlin's, they said basically I have to confirm the size of my flywheel - it should theoretically be the "old" one but who knows.
All I know is, it's a W56 trans, based on the door code.
Now, he said there's a W56d and W56e, and that will differentiate which to use - but door just says W56, I've never heard the distinction.

Is there any way I can tell w/o having to pull it first? I'd really rather have the parts on hand....

Consider tossing them your VIN, or having the dealer look it up for you.

Years for cars start in the fall, not spring, Sept, IIRC, so I'd think the latter would apply.

I haven't heard of a W56d nor a W56e either, unless Marlin's done something to mod what he reworks. That part sounds like horsepucky to me.

To answer the q? Nope.

I believe they are not actually "called" those names, just they are revision #'s for the trannies. to you and me it's a W56, to someone that knows the thickness of every gear and the differences between them all... you get the point.
They cant tell you how to figure it out, even by VIN or anything? weird... i wouldnt call anything marlin says "horsepucky" (yes i had to google what it meant, lol).

Well, just to be clear - the guy(who was very nice and awesome, didn't catch his name) said to check the VIN and that could tell... but I was at work and didn't have it on hand to read off to him .
so I checked last night, actually I can't find anything in the VIN that said what tranny it is at all - But on the door plate it says "W56"- but nothing more.
He said the only way they knew(besides if you knew the sub-model) was by measuring the flywheel size - there is a very slight difference in diameter.
Even peering into the little access panel behind the flex plate dosn't really show enough to measure...

yeah, I will try calling the local Toy dealership w/ VIN in hand and have them look it up.However my fear there is, trying to get the info I need will be like pulling teeth. E.g. they can give me a Toyota part #, but unless they have the diameter spec (very unlikely) that's a dead end... unless I can get them to somehow look up the analogous part for a '91 and a '94 to compare...

And yeah I'm not surprised mine is considered a '93, prob 1 of the first, but I don't know if the part REALLY changed in 9/2, or 10/92...

Daz funny. He didn't talk to Marlin, per se.
I do think the guy confused the issue further with being verbose about the trannys, rather than the question, which was about a clutch kit.

RatLab, we can only 'hope' the dealer has the spec. You might also sign up for an account with toyodiy and plug your VIN in to see what you come up with.

FWIW
I have read in the past that the 93 and up clutches are a little larger. There is more contact surface area on the flywheel for it. Supposedly, you can replace your older (smaller surface area) flywheel with this larger area one as an "upgrade" for a little more clamping force with the later model clutch disk.

You are going to have to pull it anyway to get the flywheel resurfaced (you are going to have it resurfaced, right!)

Yes, of course... but that's only a day at a local shop, I'd really rather have the replacement on hand, Marlin is 3-4 shipping days away from me

And yes the 93+ is supposedly beefier (by a whole 1/4" lol), but from what the guy was saying, you can't just change the clutch, it has to match the flywheel so they both have to be the same, hence the problem.
And BTW even looking on RockAuto, even later years different mfrs list different sizes.
Maybe ToyDIY is the ticket...

Buy one kit of each. Return the one you don't use. As ZUK says, if you use a credit card, it won't cost you anything...
