Went to get may Montero inspected last weekend and it didn't pass. They would not pass it because of the hoses that are supposed to be hooked to the air cleaner were not hooked up, and the thermostatic hose from the exhaust manifold cover to air filter housing was missing.

They suggested that I go to the DMV and get a waver, but I avoid that place like the plague! So, here is what I did.

I made a plate that has the weber cut-out in the right spot relative to the location the air filter would set. Also, it needed to have an offset of about 1/2 inch so that the filter would set flat and in the same location as stock.

Here you can see where I cut out the air filter housing just inside where the filter element sets. I took the welded up adapter and mounted it to the carb, then with the filter housing in place marked the two in three places so that I could determine exactly where to weld it in place.

A slight modification had to be made to the foot on the housing where it attaches to the valve cover but was not a big deal.

Got it all hooked up and passed inspection no problem.

I have the pattern for the plate if anyone is interested.

Well that solved that problem, and I bet from now on the inspectors won't even notice you have swapped carbs. Great idea!

yeah and as an added bonus it is alot quieter with the original air cleaner in place. Before I could hear the carb sucking air, now... nothing.

Damn this is a cool mod. I have been putting off swapping a Weber I got because of the adapter I would have to get to run my snorkel. I have an air cleaner base that i welded the preheater and that other hole, so I could just mod that. Awesome!!!!!

A "friend" of mine has been using a "cosmetic" air clear to pass inspection for years now. Basically, it involves the stock air cleaner, a Sawzall, a short bolt through the top of the cleaner to hold the original wing nut, and a couple of bolts to mount the cleaner in its original position (roughly over the top of the Weber air intake).

With air gaps-o-plenty between the cleaner and carb, it doesn't do too good a job of supplying the engine with clean air - but it's only on there for about 10 minutes every year anyhow!

Necessity is the mother of invention. You have come up with such a bright way to solve a simple problem that I bet others in the same predicament will be interested in your built.
Fine tune it, clean it up, simplify construction, look at possible applications and you will be putting some extra dough in your pocket.

Great built man, I give you 5
