I gave my 4Runner to my niece, who just loves her 4runner, but she is having problems with the key to start and unlock the 4runner. It is worn down, I call my local dealership's part man he couldn't find his way out of a box. Does any body know how I can maybe get another key from Toyota if its possible.

Pull the cylinder from the ignition switch. Take it to a locksmith. Have him make a key for it. Done...

If the key doesn't have a chip on it, just take it to a hardware store that makes keys and get a new one cut.

His problem is the original key cannot be copied.

As corey said, the passenger side lock cylinder has the key code on it. take it and bring it to a locksmith to cut you a key. get a new key blank from toyota if you want the best quality...

Still easier to pull the ignition cylinder and have a real locksmith make a key. They can do that.
Door panels take more time to pull than the ignition cylinder.

Run some graphite in the locks to help free them up. I blast carb cleaner in them first, then blow dry with compressed air. This gets all the dirt out. Then lube with graphite powder. Works like a charm.

How do you take out the ignition cylinder? I can get the door panels off in minutes....

You pull the top and bottom cover off the steering column. Then insert the key and put a paperclip in the release hole that is in the switch housing. Then turn the key to accessory position and pull the cylinder out. Simple and you don't have to fight with the door panel and the little plastic clips that like to break, or the clip that retains the lock in the door.
If you have experience with doing this sort of repair, maybe it is easier to go this way. I would still pull the ig. cyl. Much faster with less chance of breaking any little pla$tic clip$ that are co$tly from Toyota.
