Some among the 3/S camp have found that our 98-99 ECU's are flashable. Relevant to the Monteros? http://chromedecu.org/

Do you mean 'your' as in your GT/Eclipse/Diamonte? Yes, some/most of those are. The Montero Sport ECM is completely different until you start getting past '00.

Re: Cromed ECU

Expensive. This could run $1000 in hardware/software and cabling. More $$$ for some serious tuning - and you'd need to do some, that's for sure.

I'll have to look at the ROM. We don't have turbos, or blowers, active exhaust, knock sensors .... Maybe for a price we could get a ROM built that would work if its impossible to "turn stuff off" via software.

Might work for Danny if he want's to replace his PCM and spend a lot of time/$$$ tuning. It won't be cheap either way. Sport pin functions differ from the Eclipse/GT/Dimonte/etc. even if the plugs are the same so you need to either hack the factory harness - which I STRONGLY discourage - or get a Boomslang harness.

I'm worried more about the ROM. Lots of stuff interacts in an ECM/PCM. You can't just leave some things disconnected if you don't use them because that can affect how other seemingly unrelated calculations are made which will affect how (or if) the vehicle runs overall.

I don't know how practical this really is. The only thing it gets you since this is NOT a drop in replacement is OBD and the only reason you really need to retain OBD is for emissions testing. So, if you HAVE to have it - as I do - it might be worthwhile. Otherwise, I could put together a MS for less money that would be a lot less of a PITA.
