Might not be a bad idea to upgrade to a higher AAA level....would be nice if you could manage it that way.

We're all pulling for ya

When I was at a smog place here in CA, getting an emissions certificate for the Outback, the technician and I got to talking about trying to get carbed out of state vehicles to pass emissions. He told me that he won't automatically fail a car just because it has a different carburetor on it. But he will fail it if it doesn't have the major emissions hoses hooked up, which I know on my Weber on the SWB I don't. There's at least two hoses I can think of that need to be hooked up to something, in order to pass this visual inspection. There's that large diameter hose that went from the air cleaner to some gizmo on the exhaust side, and the valve cover breather hose (I have a small pleated filter element sitting on top of the valve cover vent now).

There was a thread on here about someone who made a template to match up a Weber carb top with the stock air cleaner base, so those hoses could be hooked back up.

Not to hijack the thread about the LWB, but here is the thread about the air cleaner that would get your SWB thru a visual check in California. Good luck on both!

Ouch.

Want to check one more thing, maybe? See what it would cost to have it shipped to Phoenix.

We'd fix it for ya. Just check on the transport, don't worry about the rest just yet.

I've requested some quotes to get my LWB shipped from Amarillo to Phoenix, in a non-op status, for the AZ crew to work their magic. Been trading emails directly with John B from the AZ crew, so we'll see if this option pans out.

Stay tuned!

If SRTNate and I leave tonight with the tow dolly from Atlanta, we can pick it up, have it in AZ, and be back for work on monday. Im sure it would cost you so much in gas for us to do that it wouldnt work, and my wife would never let me leave.

You might get to leave, but you'd leave a couple of things at home...

Thanks for the offer, appreciate it. If I decide to cut my losses, there are a few things on the Monty that I'd like to get, like the roof racks, factory hitch sitting on the passenger floor behind the driver's seat, breaker bar with lug nut socket in the back cargo area, and a new fire extinguisher.

I still haven't convinced myself what to do with it one way or the other, but I'll have to make a decision soon. It will cost me $750 to ship it from Amarillo to Phoenix in a non-op status, for the AZ crew to work their magic and get it road worthy again. If the labor is free and all I have to pay for is parts and such, that should still be cheaper than trying to get another one here in So Cal. Cheapest one I've found that I'd be interested in buying is $2000, but that's for a SWB 4-cyl 5-speed. There's a LWB down in Redondo Beach for $2800, supposedly with a new engine, new paint, nice tires, sound system, roof rack, driving lights, etc. But that one is an AT, which I've heard isn't as stout a trans as the MT?

Anyway, I'll let you know if I'll take you up on your offer to help on your way thru Amarillo.

Gotta love this Montero community!

Uh, where'd ya hear that? The auto is damn near bullet-proof. As long as some modicum of basic maintenance is performed and fluid levels are kept proper, they'll just about run forever.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

The Auto vs Manual thing is pretty much pointless when it comes to the V6 spec. The V6 lockup auto trans seems to be the golden ticket of automatic transmissions, and the 5speed bolted to your LWB is heavy and stout as f$#%@. Just ask my friend who had me install one on Xmas eve...
