My 1st gen 3.0 Montero LWB is now blowing white smoke like crazy so I am either going to rebuild or swap to a different motor. I would love to go diesel but after much research think it's going to be a major PITA & a lot of $$$. My other choice is a 4.3 (tons of cheap Blazers on CL). I have done a lot of searching & can't find much info on doing the 4.3 swap. Is it worth it or should I just rebuild the 3.0? This vehicle will be used for my family expo vehicle & DD. Any advice will be much appreciated.

You need to think about these things if your doing a swap: Welder/ metal for mounts Driveshafts Speedometer Shifter Alternator A/C Power steering Vacuum lines Engine wiring Throttle cable Body lift or floor cutting Tachometer Air intake tubes and filter Exhaust and o2 sensors Radiator Fans How you plan to lift the engines in and out 4x4 shifter
Etc.
Good luck! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I rebuilt mine and I've been very pleased with it. Search my username and "To rebuild or not to rebuild" and you'll see a bunch of pictures documenting my overhaul. You can also search username FrankR and "Bob's engine build" and it'll give you plenty of info. Where are you in GA?
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Dillon, great checklist for anyone contemplating a swap. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Great info!
I guess I'll rebuild since I want to get it back on the road quick as possible. Does anybody know any good shops to work on the Montero in the Atlanta area? I've used OPM in Cumming for a couple rebids but they don't want to handle the Mitsubishi. I would do it but don't have time theses days due to work.
