I have my doubts about accelerating slowly also. A vehicle gets far better mileage at a constant cruising speed than it does while accelerating, so why would you want spend as long as possible in an acceleration mode? Getting up to speed briskly (not rapidly, but not sluggishly either) will not use much more fuel than a slower acceleration rate, but gets you to the far more economical cruising speed much sooner.

That reminds me of a speeding ticket excuse I once heard: "Officer, I was in a hurry to get to the gas station before I ran out of gas." Frank

Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. Yeah right...rofl Station tanks are cylindrical and lay horizontal, i.e. its ridiculous to think the floating roof changes sizes as the level goes up and down. Besides the vapors re condense on the tank walls and drip back to the liquid level.

Accelerating slowly helps. If you keep the manifold vacuum high, you are getting the best mileage possible, BUT, it also is very good to upshift as soon as feasible, because the real key is keeping the engine rpms low, thus pumping the least air, thus burning the least fuel.

My buddy had a 62 valiant with a 170 slant 6, and it was already a fuel sipper of a car for a 60's beast. Stupid thing had reverse lugs on the passenger side!! anyway.... His dad had a vacuum gauge hooked up, and magneted to the dash, and it was always a game to keep the vacuum gauge pegged to max to burn the least amount of fuel.
He loved that car. Katrina got it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Hey, I had a 63 Valiant Signet 300, with the 225 slant 6 and a pushbutton torqueflite. I can tell you that if you had 4 passengers on board and they all had $.50 to donate to the tank, you could go to the state line and buy beer and drive around half the night drinking it before you bounced off the bottom of the gauge. 22.9 cents per gallon, 15.9 during gas price wars...

Original author inhaled a few too many fumes ... Not the underground tanks. They are speaking about the above ground tanks at the factory.
