And miss the opportunity to buy a new tool, or learn the "proper" technique in case I need to do somethign similar again?

You are right though, I may eventually just use the angle grinder etc, but that also leaves a heck of a mess, and since shop time is usually limited to after the kids bedtime, the noise is generally not advisable.
