New OME 906 coils 1/2 difference in height? #1033171 08/14/11 12:17 AM

Just received some new 906 OME coils for my 2000 4Runner and noticed there is a 1/2" height difference in the coils. Is this normal? I haven't taken the old coils off yet to compare, but i don't know if I should go to the trouble as I have not worked on 4-Runners before.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yes, that's normal with other OME coils as well. For years I used OME rear springs (882? - I can't remember) with the longer one on the driver's side. I don't know if that's the "official" way to do it, but it made sense to me and was never a problem. I put it on the driver's side because of the additional weight of the gas tank, gas tank skid, and driver on that side.

If you have 2 tall jack stands, I recommend setting the frame on them somewhere in front of the rear axle (like under the rear seats). The 4Runner can be sitting fairly level while on the jack stands. Oh, and it's best if it's in 4 wheel drive with the parking brake on so the front wheels hold it in place. Remove both rear wheels, disconnect the rear swaybar endlinks and just the bottom ends of the shocks. Then you can easily move the rear axle down enough to get the springs in/out. Just be aware of the rear brake line length if you don't have an extended rear brake line above the rear diff. You might need to keep a floor jack under the diff to protect it.

Thanks Jeff! I was relatively sure that was it. Damn the shocks are not easy to remove after 10 years. Not to mention the fun of getting tools up there to remove the top nut. I ended up cutting part of the shock shield off so I could hold the piston with vise-grips. PB helped with one side but the other just sheared off. I don't remember my Rodeos OME coils being different heights, but that was ages ago. smile
