Suggestion for 95 (and possibly earlier) Montero Owners - Replace the front caliper bracket bolts with some from an older model. Or at least add some lock washers to the original 95 bolts. The 95 bolts do not have lock washers. The later models have bolts with lock washers.

Full Story -
About 1 year ago I picked up a pair of front brake calipers at a junk yard. These came from a 96 or 97 model. I was looking for a good pair of calipers that I would use to keep from having to pay a core charge and make two trips to NAPA. I replaced my 95 calipers with NAPA calipers about 9 months ago. When I pulled my 95 calipers I noticed the 95 bolts did not have lock washers, while the junk yard calipers had bolts with lock washers. I decided to use the 95 bolts.

Last evening the bottom bolt on the passenger side fell out. This let the caliper rotate into the wheel. I had a great deal of noise when this happened. Thankfully, I was only about 1 mile from home and it was mostly up hill. I removed the other 3 remaining 95 bolts and replaced them all with the later style bolts and lock washers.

I thought about putting the later style bolts on my 95 when I replaced the calipers. But, at the time I figured I would keep the 95 bolts. It seems that Mitsubishi decided to change the bolts after 95. It seems like they added the lock washers for a good reason.

If you have a 95 or possibly earlier Montero, I would suggest that when you replace the front calipers it would be a good time to add some lock washers.
