2.5 Pajero...I think the starter might be shot. Thought I'd come on here to see if anyone knows a cross reference part number for a Starter?? Anyone?

Sorry, only did an alternator in my 2.5. Have you tried getting your existing rebuilt? I wouldn't be surprised if Mitsu used it in another app, but I couldn't tell you which one. Sorry... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I'm still trying to diagnose if it is the starter although. Even with a jump the engine would just barely turn and that's with heavy duty cables that work as far as I know. When I turn it over the engine just barely moves then makes clacking/clicking noises...

The headlights turn on although hard to tell if dim or not.

I gave the starter and celluloid a couple bangs - no difference.

Thoughts? Anyone?

Let's go back a bit. Year/Make? I'm assuming 91 or 92? Was it running fine prior to having starting issues? Any other issues?

Assuming everything else is good, I'd go back to the battery cables, esp the grounds. Do you have the equipment to charge the battery separately, or to swap in a known charged unit? Be nice to eliminate that before getting too deep...

Whereabouts are you in Calgary?

Edit: Did some digging and see you have a 90, which was the last of the JDM gen I's. I won't be as familiar with it in a diesel (my JDM 2.5 was a genII, although not a lot different, but I had lots of genI gassers!).
