The shifter forks in the tranny are in slots on the synchro hubs on the mainshaft. The gears are fixed axially on the shaft, and the synchro hub slides fore and aft to lock one or another gear to the shaft to engage that gear. If the thrust plate or bearings are going on the mainshaft, the whole shaft, gears, shaft, and synchro hub, move fore and aft in the tranny, moving the shift fork, and thus moving the shifted fore and aft. If your shifter is not moving, the bearings and thrust plate on the mainshaft are sound and tight, a very good sign. I was looking for internal wear causing the shifter problem. I think you've found it in the line. Swell causes disengagement problems due to lack of slave stroke length.

Ah, thanks for that explanation! Very interesting stuff. And you're right, that's exactly what the problem is. Now I just have to get paid next week and get another line in, then I can start spending money on more fun things like getting it smogged and registered. I've never had a custom license plate before, am thinking of one this time around.

I have a brand new rubber hose for your '87 available. I put in a braided stainless hose earlier this summer, but bought the rubber one in case the SST hose didn't work for some reason. BTW it did work perfectly. Pay shipping and its yours. PM me if you want it.

Thanks plh for the clutch hose. I tried to install it tonight but the flare nut only wanted to round off. I was using a normal 10mm open ended wrench, I think I need to buy flare nut wrench to do it right. I'll get one and try again tomorrow. I'm out of steam. Long day!

Will post tomorrow when I get it done. I can't wait to have it finished. I have tons of driving to do this week for my other job! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

Major Suckage has ensued.

I borrowed a 10mm flare nut wrench from a neighbor and after getting it on the goobered up flare nut it came right off. I put the new hose on, bled the system, and voila!

Still no shifting.

Its time to replace the clutch slave and master with new units. I rebuilt the old ones and they didn't take. So I start calling and.... Nobody. NOBODY has one unless I want to pay $50 for just the slave, master has to be ordered. Autozone can get them for 24 for the master and 16 for the slave, but that'll be the weekend before I have them.

So, here we go to autodrone to order the parts...

Getting the Wheeling Fever
If you have any other transportation try to pull the master cylinder and bring it with you. I ordered through the local auto parts store, waited a week and they sent me a completely wrong master cylinder (slave was correct though).

I double checked the part number with their computer than asked to see the screen and make sure the punched in my year and model correctly, everything matched - but still the wrong part was called for. Turned out I only needed the slave, so I never figured out what the deal was with it.

Trying to save you a trip and a headache.

Ryan

Half the price, but I had to use cash.

Well, got the parts in today, will be installing them tomorrow. Hopefully this saga will be over soon! The best news is that I am moving into a place in November with a garage and I can start collecting tools etc. On the list: Welder, chop saw, grinder, and the stuff I need to make a rack and bumpers for my rig. Can't wait!
